The year 1937 was a monumental time for the history of unionization in Detroit. It was a time of rapid organization, and a series of nearly 100 sit-down strikes took the city by storm. The picketers above are seen marching in support of the massive Flint Sit-Down, the infamous pivotal at General Motors Chevrolet Plants which lasted from December of 1936 to the February, 1937 in which 90% of General Motors factories where shut down due to the ensuing parts shortage, and the United Auto Workers was recognized as the sole bargaining agent for General Motors employees.
