Evening picket during the General Motors Strike, September 14, 1970.
The picket lines had been quiet for nearly25 years between the UAW and General Motors when a 67-day strike broke out. Concerns included poor working conditions in both the areas of health and safety. At the end, and despite a failing economy, the UAW was granted a historic settlement: not only were their initial safety concerns addressed, but they were given a contract which included cost of living allowances and a new pension plan. Above, Ivory Jackson holds the picket line through the night.
