Mexican girls in traditional costume, September 1, 1980.
Situated primarily in Southwest Detroit, the Mexican community has the distinction of being one of the only ethnic groups whose population continued to grow through the end of the century. Mexicans first started arriving in large numbers during the First World War, however, their numbers went into a sift decline during the Depression when nearly 90% were deported by the federal government. The community quickly re-established itself after the Second World War through immigration and the settling of migrant workers. |
