Scenes from the 1973 Detroit Federation of Teachers Strike, October 11, 1973.
Defying a back-to-work order by the Wayne County Circuit Court, enormous fines, and pressure from the media, Detroit School Board, and parents, nearly 5,000 DFT teachers and their supporters staged a massive picket outside the School Center Building during one of the longest and most bitter strikes in the school systems history. Increased pay, accountability, and class sizes were the issues that dragged the strike out to 43 days, causing the Detroit Public Schools to close for over a month.
