AFSCME New York Local 420 members board a bus headed for the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom in Washington D. C. The Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s first speech before a national audience, entitled “Give Us The Ballot.” The event marked the third anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, and aimed to promote both school integration and increased protections of voting rights for African-Americans.
