Photographer’s caption: “G. MENNEN (SOAPY) WILLIAMS, 1960. The governor of Michigan holds the Michigan sign topped by his trademark bow tie at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Soapy Williams was governor for six two-year terms, 1948 to 1960. During the presidency of John F. Kennedy, he was assistant secretary of state for African affairs. Later, he was elected chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. He died in 1988, just short of his 77th birthday.”
