Moving boat with water spraying behind it; back of Tony Spina sitting on the front of the boat taking photographs of driver Roy Duby; both wearing lifejackets and helmets, Detroit, Michigan.

Photographer’s caption: “DETROIT, 1970. During a trial run for the Gold Cup power boat race, I rode backwards standing in the pit at the bow of the boat while Miss U. S. raced at speads of up to 147 m.p.h. We started out slower, but there was no spray, so I kept giving the signal for “faster” to Roy Duby, the driver of the boat. I couldn’t even be strapped in, but I did have a life jacket on. The photographer on the shore was probably waiting for me to get flipped off. Duby said, “You’re crazy, you’re crazy.” George Simon, the owner of the boat, proclaimed me “a distinguished member of the 100 Mile Per Hour Club - Backwards.””
