(24819) Johnson signs DC school cafeteria bill

President Lyndon B. Johnson congratulates ASCME President Jerry Wurf (left) and Lenzell Ruffin, Government Workers Union Local 1 president, after signing the bill that provided raises for the District of Columbia’s 645 public school cafeteria workers. Ruffin led 400 members to Capitol Hill to put pressure on members of Congress to pass the bill before adjournment. The legislation affirms a contract between the union and the D.C. Board of Education that raises the pay of food service workers from a minimum of $1.35 an hour to $1.65. President Johnson used two pens to sign the bill and presented one of them to Ruffin. Wurf holds the one presented to him.
