A new unit of police officers, drawn from the motorcycle, traffic and mounted divisions, are trained in "commando tactics" on the Belle Isle Athletic Field. According to a Detroit News reporter, nearly 250 "husky police minutemen" were trained for riot duty in response to the civil unrest of June 1943.
