Warren E. Bow was the second president of Wayne University. Deputy superintendent of Detroit Public Schools (DPS) when Frank Cody retired in 1942, the Board of Education appointed Bow superintendent of DPS and president of Wayne University.
Bow led the university through World War II. Trained as an engineer and a veteran of WW I, after working in several automobile plants, Bow began teaching in Detroit in 1915. He advanced through a number of administrative positions before becoming superintendent of DPS and president of Wayne University shortly after America entered World War II. Under Bow's leadership, the university became an official War Information Center. It trained thousands of people in civil defense and over 400,000 people for jobs in Detroit's war production efforts. Wayne University's College of Medicine gained a national reputation during this era. It also sponsored the U.S. Army's 36th General Hospital in Europe.
Bow died in office in 1945. His presidency was short, but he led the university through one of its toughest, but most important periods.
