Commonwealth Magazine: “What Schools Should—and Shouldn't—Learn From Markets”

In this article from the Commonwealth Club of California's publication, Al Shanker discusses the need for schools to develop incentive systems that work to motivate both students and teachers. He sees lessons in corporate capitalism and in foreign education systems. He argues that gaining entrance into college should be more difficult and that employers should consider high school performance in hiring decisions. This would encourage students to work harder. read more »

Compass: “Thoughts on Education: An Interview with William Bennett and Albert Shanker”

This Compass interview asks Al Shanker and William Bennett, former Secretary of Education, ten questions and lists their answers side by side. Topics include problems in the school system, how to improve higher education, corporate roles in education, standards, President George H.W. Bush's performance, and school choice. While Shanker and Bennett disagree on the role of teachers' unions and on some policies like school choice, their thoughts on standards and higher education are similar.

Testimony before the House Subcommittee on Elementary, Secondary and Vocational Education

Al Shanker comments on bill H.R. 3347 whose purpose is to allow for greater educational innovation efforts at the state and local levels. He believes in the goal of the bill, but he has a few requests that, if enacted, will calm his reservations: that protection against the privatization of public education be included and that the extent to which programs can be consolidated is adequately defined.
