Economic Alliance for Michigan Records

The Economic Alliance for Michigan was established as a non-profit labor and business coalition by for-profit companies and unions in 1982. It was founded to create a forum to discuss issues they all faced in their day-to-day operations and implement plans to mitigate these problems. Their ultimate goal is to revive Michigan’s economy and preserve these working conditions to make the state a great place in which to do business and be employed. Some of the issues they are taking action on in 2013 are health care, unemployment insurance, and worker’s compensation. The current board is made up of half businesses and half labor unions, with representation from major corporations and unions.

The Economic Alliance for Michigan Records focus on the founding of the corporation and its early years of operation. This includes the proposal for the Alliance, correspondence regarding initial board members and participating companies and unions, and general correspondence for the Alliance. Also included in the collection are correspondence, memorandums, and proposals regarding the issue of health care legislation and costs that affected Michigan businesses and employees.

Economic Development Corporation of Greater Detroit: Michael Weston Records

A graduate of Brown University and the University of Michigan Law School, Michael Weston practiced law at Hill, Lewis, Andrews, Adams, Goodrich and Power (now known as Clark Hill), before serving as Secretary (1969), Treasurer (1970) and President (1972) of the Economic Development Corporation (EDC). Developed out of the 1967 riots, the EDC of Greater Detroit was a multi-corporate consortium created as the Detroit business establishment’s vehicle to increase opportunities for African-Americans and Hispanics to grow their own businesses. Weston left the EDC in 1973 to accept a position as a university attorney at Northwestern University. He retired from Northwestern in 2001 as vice president and general counsel. The EDC merged with the Inner City Business Improvement Forum circa 1974.

The records of Michael C. Weston reflect the administrative concerns of the EDC during his tenure there and particularly document his work with the organization.

Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) Records

SEMCOG grew out of primarily the Detroit Metropolitan Area Regional Planning Commission (DRPC) and the Supervisors Inter-County Committee (SICC) in an effort to consolidate regional planning agencies and avoid duplication of programs and services. SEMCOG has continued its predecessors' work of assisting local planning programs, collecting area planning data, and providing an infrastructure for procurement of federal aid.

Records in Part I document SEMCOG's predecessor, the DRPC, and its transition to and early operation of the Planning Division of SEMCOG, through the office files of Paul Reid, Executive Director at the time of transition. Contained therein are findings of various planning projects and studies conducted by the two entities.

Records in Part II relate primarily to the administration of SEMCOG and the environmental, transportation, and economic issues it dealt with.

Records in Part III related to SEMCOG's work in environment, transportation, and urban planning. Documented are the activities of executive directors John Amberger and Paul Tait, and the Executive and Advisory Council from SEMCOG's inception through 2003. The records of the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition (MAC) a private-sector sister organization to SEMCOG are also included.
