Monsignor Clement Kern Papers

Monsignor Clement Kern was a Roman Catholic Priest at Most Holy Trinity Church in Detroit, MI for 34 years. Under his leadership, Holy Trinity became a major center for Latino American residents of southwest Detroit. Kern became active in the migratory labor arena and helped with the Michigan Committee to Aid Farm Workers.

Monsignor Kern’s records document the struggle of Detroit area migrant workers and their fight for compensation for their work. The collection also explores his involvement in organizations to further the equality of minorities.

UFW Administration Department Records

United Farm Workers grew out of several farm workers organizations of the 1960s and was led by Cesar Chavez for over thirty years. The Administration Department records reflect the wide range of people and groups with whom the UFW corresponded. The work of the union itself is well represented, including U.S., Canada, and Europe boycott files, El Malcriado files, and negotiations with southern California grape growers.

Part 3 of the records represent the second decade of the union’s progress toward the goals of improving wages and working conditions for farm workers. Included are major legal cases, including UFW vs. Teamsters, UFW vs. DiGeorgio, and the Blythe Massacre; boycotts, including the Lettuce Boycott and Grape Boycott; and correspondence, including Cesar Chavez personal correspondence.

The work of Cesar Chavez, former President of the United Farm Workers, on behalf of farm migrants, resulted in his being closely examined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was seen as possibly subversive in the 1960s for several reasons, such as his empowerment of minorities against a powerful and Anglo-controlled agribusiness and association with Alinsky, a known radical. The FBI records are microfilm copies published in cooperation with the FBI, and released under the Freedom of Information Act. They deal primarily with the 1960s, the period fo the UFW's greatest growth.

This September 26th, please join us for a screening of “Latino Americans, 500 Years of History,” Documentary Episode 5: Prejudice and Pride (1965-1980). Representatives from Wayne State University's Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies will join attendees in a dialogue on the episode’s themes of work and citizenship. The group will also address the role archives can play in a community’s history and the role of community in determining materials that are preserved. The event, hosted at the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (1211 Trumbull Avenue, Detroit, Michigan), will explore the connection between the film's use of archival materials and the importance of archives in documenting a movement for future research. read more »

Photographer's notes: "Ia Moua Yang has been a Pandau Artist for the past twenty years. Most of that time she has sewn traditional designs. Recently she decided the tapestry format would be a good way to document a preserve the history of her family and their people for future generations. She feels this is especially important because until recently the Hmong had no written form for their language so that history could be recorded in writing. She has made several tapestries embroidered with the story of the war in Laos, her people's flight from their homes, their escape to refugee camps in Thailand and their eventual emigration to the United States."

George Yee (left) and and Ben Leong (right) work the line on the Curtiss Helldiver bomber wing line in a Hudson Motor Car Company plant in Detroit. Both were businessmen (Yee owned a laundry and Leong owned a restaurant) who volunteered to work on the Helldiver line in response to Japanese atrocities in China. They later recruited 135 other Chinese workers to the plant- one-third of all "employable" Chinese living in Detroit at that time.
