Folklore Archive: Studies and Research Projects Records

The Folklore Archive, established in 1939, contains the oldest and largest record of urban folk traditions in the United States. To document these traditions, Wayne State University students conducted field research projects covering a broad range of topics. The archive is strong in modern industrial and occupational folklore, reflecting the rich ethnic diversity and work-oriented heritage of Detroit and southeastern Michigan. The Folklore Archive: Studies and Research Projects Records contain transcripts and research studies related to Greek-American family life, Southern upland migrant folk culture, traditional medical beliefs and American folk music.

International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit Records

In 1911, the national board of the YWCA established the first International Institute branch in New York City to assist the growing number of immigrant women, and in 1919, the Detroit branch opened. The purpose of the International Institute is to promote the welfare, education, and social integration of immigrant and minority peoples, both permanent residents and visitors.
The papers of Part 1 of the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit consist of minutes, correspondence, reports, financial records, clippings, newsletters, pamphlets and other publications reflecting the activities of the Institute. The papers also reflect the Institute's work with particular groups like Japanese war brides, war refugees, Polish- and Lebanese-Americans, and others living in established ethnic communities in the Detroit area, its effort to educate metropolitan Detroiters about foreign cultures, and its campaign to fund the construction of the Kirby building.
Part 2 consists of the bulletin, "International Institute News," from 1945-1980, which was published several times a year.

Joe Placentia Papers

Joe Placentia was born in Los Angeles (East). He worked with the UAW for 41 years, including serving as President of UAW local 808, as international representative of Region 6, and as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention 4 times. Placentia retired from the UAW on July 31, 1989. This collection contains reports, correspondence, and perspectives on immigration and illegal immigration dated 1975-1977, particularly in regard to Southern California.

Matilda Robbins Papers

Manuscripts (articles and stories), clippings, correspondence, personal papers, and photographs collected by Mrs. Robbins, who was a labor organizer and writer for the IWW from 1912 until her death in 1963. Subjects include the Paterson N.J. Silk Strike.

UFW Information and Research Department Records

The UFW grew out of several farm workers organizations in the 1960s and was led for over thirty years by Cesar Chavez. The Information and Research Department serves as the research center for the union, collecting materials of interest in many areas importantin to the organization. Their records reflect the range of services which the union provided for its members, including legal and immigration assistance, workman's compensation claims, healthcare, and grievance mediation. Other subjects include: boycotts; contract negotiations; strikes; Teamsters dispute.

UFW: Peter Velasco Records

Peter Velasco has served in a number of positions in the UFW. He worked as the Stockton, California Field Office Director, as the director of the Strike Defense Fund, was a board member of the Farm Workers Credit Union, and the National Executive Board. He and his wife Dolores Ann also worked on the US Senate campaign of Tom Hayden in 1976. Pete Velasco died in 1995. His collection consists of office files, largely from the time when Velasco was Stockton Area Director and personal files from the early 1960s to the late 1970s.

Part 2 of this collection includes materials relating to both the United Farm Workers movement and to Peter Velasco’s life more broadly, covering the span of 1942-2000.

Members of the Detroit Fire Department carry the crucifix out of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church after they were unable to stop a fire from destroying the building. The fire started at, and also destroyed, the Briggs Manufacturing Plant directly adjacent to the church. The church was located at Meldrum & Benson on Detroit's east side.
