Arthur A. Almeida Papers

Arthur A. Almeida was born in about 1929 and lived in San Pedro, California. He helped found the San Pedro Bay Historical Society. With his interest in local history, Almeida documented history of the early labor efforts including International Workers of the World (IWW) local - Maritime Transport Workers 510 and International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). Includes a speech given by Paul Ware and historical articles by Almeida about early organizing efforts in San Pedro and Los Angeles. Arthur Almeida is married to Irene and they had three children, Arthur 'Joaquim', Marjella, and Lourette.

Alex Baskin Papers

Dr. Alex Baskin is a professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook; among his main
research interests is social history of the late 20th century, especially with regard to the 1960s and 1980s. Dr. Baskin also attended Wayne State University during the 1960s where he studied various left-wing social movements. Among his published works include The Woman Rebel and The Masses.

The materials in this collection reflect a wide variety of subjects that Dr. Baskin researched and mostly pertain to various social movements of the late 20th century. Included are posters and flyers related to Marxism, the anti-war movement, the women’s movement, Jewish issues, the labor movement, foreign policy under the Reagan Administration, and much more. The collection also contains various essays, some written by Dr. Baskin, as well as newspaper clippings and newsletters related to his interests.

Stanley D. Kane Papers

This collection contains an International Workers of the World (IWW) song book, I Will Win Songs to fan the flames of discontent originally published in 1926. 22nd edition. Inscribed inside is a note "Given in the memory of Judge Stanley D. Kane (1907-1991) who fought for union rights in the 40s, served on the Minnesota District Bench for 27 years, and, in his youth, rode the rails to the wheat fields of North Dakota."

Robert Rossi Papers

Robert Rossi was a union organizer who worked with the IWW and the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) in the 1970s and 1980s. He was also involved with Students for a Democratic Society during the Vietnam War. His papers show the IWW’s efforts to organize and secure a contract for the workers at an Ann Arbor bookstore called the University Cellar in 1979. There are also materials about organization and negotiation efforts by the ILGWU for Pennsylvania garment workers.

Bruce Duncan Phillips (1935-2008), better known as Utah Phillips, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 15, 1935. He became well known as a folk singer, performer, storyteller, and activist beginning in the late 1960s and continued to be a prominent figure in the American folk and labor communities for the following four decades.

The Utah Phillips Papers document the personal, professional, and political activities of Utah Phillips. The papers include correspondence, interviews, writings, notes, contracts, flyers, publications, articles, clippings, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and other materials.

Digitizing Series 10 of the Industrial Workers of the World Records

This May, at the start of my last semester at Wayne State’s School of Library and Information Science, I began a Practicum in Digital Content Management here at the Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs. Over the last three months I have spent many hours with Series 10 of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) Collection. This series, which is mostly pamphlets and handouts, needed digitization to keep it alive. Access to the series was restricted, not for inflammatory content, but because of the fragile condition of the early 20th century documents. This made me a kind of digital life support for this information rich material. read more »
