During the second World War, Dr. Noer served as a doctor at the 36th General Hospital, a field hospital under the sponsorship of Wayne University, School of Medicine.

The first 36th General Hospital was created during WWI under the title of Base Hospital 36 and was located in Vittel, France. During WWII, Dean Edgar H. Norris of Wayne University sought approval to recreate the success of Base Hospital 36 from the War Department, and was granted permission to create a 1,000-bed hospital in 1942. Upon gaining approval, Dean Norris selected staff members to be sent to the 36th General Hospital, which included Dr. Wyman C. C. Cold, Dr. James M. Winfield, Nurse and Professor Edna T. Plambeck, and Dr. Rudolf J. Noer. Dean Norris then elected Dr. Richard M. McKean as the Chief of Medicine in the new unit. The new staff were trained at Camp Carson in Colorado prior to deployment, followed by a brief training at Camp Shanks. The hospital staff was deployed on August 20, 1943 and they first sailed to Algeria, and then arrived in Italy in October of 1943. The hospital then followed the troops to France, where it operated until November 1943, after which it was deactivated. In sum, the hospital operated from 1943 to 1945 and treated over 45,000 patients.

This collection contains "A History of the 36th General Hospital," a manuscript written by Dr. Rudolf J. Noer. Additionally, this collection contains correspondence about the hospital, some military memorabilia including language and culture books, and correspondence and documents about the 36th General Hospital, Camp Carson, and the hospital’s time in Italy and France.

Wayne State University School of Medicine Occupational Therapy Department Records

This collection contains the records of Barbara Jewett, Chairman of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Occupational Therapy Occupational Therapy Department.

The Occupational Therapy Curriculum was started at Wayne University in September 1944. Dr. John Lee of the Department of Special Education, the initial adviser in this program, submitted a curriculum which was given temporary approval by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association. In February 1945, Barbara Jewett, O.T.R., joined the faculty as an assistant professor. This was a cooperative arrangement with the Detroit Orthopedic Clinic where she served as a consultant for the Curative Workshop. The curriculum was set up as a general University Program under the responsibility of Clarence Hilberry, Dean of Administration. The degree was offered in both the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Education.

In the fall of 1946, Miss Jewett became a full time instructor and curriculum counselor, and she remained for 28 years as chairman of the department until her retirement in 1974. The curriculum and professional courses were centered in Grace Hospital, and clinical affiliation centers were arranged by Miss Jewett. In the spring of 1947, a department was equipped by the hospital to provide a clinical setting for the curriculum. The addition of a treatment program necessitated the addition of a therapist to the staff, which was made possible through a cooperative arrangement with the Hospital and the University. On July 8, 1948 the Council of Medical Education gave full approval to the curriculum, under the medical direction of Dr. Max K. Newman. The Occupational Therapy Program was given the status of a Department in the College of Liberal Arts in the spring of 1956.

In February, 1959, the Department of Occupational Therapy moved to quarters in the Rehabilitation Institute. Here the Department no longer was responsible for patient treatment, and the classroom and library facilities were available for students throughout the day. Dr. Joseph Schaeffer, Director of the Rehabilitation Institute and Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Medical School, became medical advisor for the Department.

In the fall of 1963 the Department was transferred from the College of Liberal Arts to the College of Medicine. In May 1965, the program was resurveyed and accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Medical Association.

In 1969 the Medical School created the Division of Allied Health Programs under the leadership of Dr. Fred Rights which combined the Departments of Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. The Master of Science program was officially started in September, 1970.

Collection Focus: Wayne University Illustrated Map, 1939 - Part 1

This is the first in a series of four blog posts annotating Jerry Peacock's 1939 cartoon map of the Wayne University campus. View the entire map here.

In 1939, Wayne University undergraduate and newspaper cartoonist Jerome R. Peacock drew ("with artistic license") a large-scale, heavily-detailed cartoon map of his school's campus. Peacock might have planned to include it in that year's yearbook, but the 1939 Wayne yearbook was cancelled before publication. By the time the map appeared in the 1942 yearbook, it was already somewhat out of date. read more »

This is the second in a series of four blog posts annotating Jerry Peacock's 1939 cartoon map of the Wayne University campus. This entry discusses the block between Hancock Avenue and Warren Avenue, as well as the history of sororities at Wayne.
10. Old Main, the flagship building of Wayne State University, was once the only high school in Detroit. It was built as Central High School (CHS) in 1896, replacing Capitol High School, which had burned down three years earlier. read more »

Collection Spotlight: Wayne State University Yearbooks

The first college yearbook produced by Wayne State University -- or, to be precise, by the Detroit College of Medicine (DCM) -- appeared in 1900: the Souvenir Annual, prepared by that year's junior class. The last, or latest, Wayne yearbook is 2005's The Warrior. In that 105-year span 131 yearbooks were published by the university, its predecessor institutions, and its departments and colleges. A complete collection of these annual volumes may be found in the Reading Room of the Walter P. Reuther Library. read more »
