In 1971, The Center of the Administration of Justice was created as a part of Wayne State University’s Law School with a grant from the Kellogg Foundation. The Center was focused on the assistance of judges in Michigan, and it advocated for the development of research and evaluation projects. Moreover, the Center hosted conferences and courses in order to bring key leaders together. The director of the Center of the Administration of Justice was B. J. George. This collection contains course materials for the classes taught within the Center for the Administration of Justice, as well as some correspondence regarding the courses.

Wayne State University Law School Dean's Office, Charles Joiner Records

Charles Joiner was appointed Dean Designate of the Wayne State University Law School beginning on December 1, 1967, dividing his time between this position at WSU and his position as Associate Dean at the University of Michigan Law School. He assumed his duties full-time as the Dean of the WSU Law School on June 1, 1968, formally relieving the former Dean, Arthur Neef, of his duties.

This collection includes general correspondence and student and alumni lists from the WSU Law School during the mid-1960s. The majority of the records detail the planning, correspondence, and events of the dedication of the new law school building at WSU, which took place on October 21 and 22, 1966 during Arthur Neef’s term as Dean of the WSU Law School.

Boaz Siegel Papers

The papers of Boaz Siegel, a faculty member of the Wayne University Law School for over 30 years, consist primarily of meeting minutes and agendas for the Council of Deans, the University Council, and the Faculty Affairs Committee of the University Council. Also included are correspondence and miscellaneous materials pertaining to these organizations. Boaz Siegel served as Acting Secretary of the Faculty Affairs Committee of the University Council beginning in 1949, succeeding the former secretary, Chairman R.J. Noer.

In 1939, Wayne University undergraduate and newspaper cartoonist Jerome R. Peacock drew ("with artistic license") a large-scale, heavily-detailed cartoon map of his school's campus. Peacock might have planned to include it in that year's yearbook, but the 1939 Wayne yearbook was cancelled before publication. By the time the map appeared in the 1942 yearbook, it was already somewhat out of date. read more »

This newsletter began publication in 1968 as the Law School Newsletter (1968-1969), published by the Student Bar Association. It continued under the titles Update: Law School Newsletter (1969-1971), Update: Law School News (1971-1972), Up Against The Law School News (1973), The Advocate (1973-1977), Advocate (1977-1979), S.B.G. Newsletter (1982-1983) and The Advocate (1982-1993).

The Wayne Advocate

The Gavel, first published by the Student Bar Association of Wayne University in 1952, became The Wayne Law Journal in 1953 when taken over by the Wayne University Law School. When Wayne University became Wayne State University in 1956, the journal's name was changed to The Wayne State Law Journal; in 1962, it became The Wayne Advocate. This journal ended regular publication with Volume XI in 1963, with the exception of an annual Commencement issue. A new series, The Wayne Advocate: Tabloid Edition, began publication in 1967, and continued until 1969.
