ARISE Detroit! Records

ARISE Detroit! is a non-profit coalition of twenty-two community groups with the mission of encouraging volunteerism in order to tackle major issues troubling the Detroit community. This collection includes administrative materials, news clippings, and advertising materials for the organizations’ special events.

Ken Barger Papers

Ken Barger (1941-), who was raised in east Tennessee, became active in social change after his experiences serving in the Vietnam War. He was a professor of Anthropology for thirty years at Indiana University Indianapolis, focusing professionally on social change. Through these professional interests, he got involved with the farm labor movement and the immigrant rights movement. Barger has been an active member of the FLOC movement since 1979. He participated in many activities, such as building boycotts, farm labor education, immigrant rights, and public education about migrant worker justice. He was the vice president of the Farm Labor Research Project and the community organizer for FLOC. As of 2011, he serves on the board of directors for the Campaign for Migrant Worker Justice as secretary.

The Ken Barger Papers are predominantly FLOC materials. Included are packets from the FLOC Constitutional Conventions and collective bargaining agreements between workers and companies like Vlasic Foods, Heinz U.S.A. and Campbell Soup. Several campaigns are covered with an abundance of material relating to the Campbell Soup Campaign and Mt. Olive Campaign. There are also copies of FLOC publications and Nuestra Lucha.

Detroit Latino Records

Organizations in this collection include New Detroit, Inc., National Council of La Raza,
Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Additionally, this collection encompasses the work of many organizations involved in the Consortium of Hispanic Agencies, such as the Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development (La Sed), Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS), Latino Family Services, and SER, Jobs for Progress, Inc.

Finally, this collection includes materials created by Detroit Latino Agenda and Coalition, an organization that was started by the Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies at Wayne State University in 1990. The organization focuses on challenges and opportunities for Detroit’s Latino community and it creates conferences in order to foster discussion and collaboration in the greater Detroit Latino community.

The Detroit Latino Records primarily contains memorandum, meeting minutes, conference materials, and program materials for Latino community organizations within Detroit, as well as résumés and relevant news articles. This collection also includes materials produced by national organizations and academic programs, including programs within Wayne State University and its Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies, as well as the University of Michigan.

Nettie Kravitz Papers

Nettie Kravitz was a labor organizer, feminist scholar, and long-term member of the Johnson-Forest Tendency and its later forms, Correspondence Publishing Committee and Facing Reality Publishing Committee. The collection contains correspondence and both published and unpublished political writings that thoroughly document the ideological disagreements resulting in each organization. The collection also contains materials related to Kravitz’s scholarship in Women’s Studies and Literature and her political priorities.

Michigan Labor History Society Records

The Michigan Labor History Society, founded in 1977, is a local organization committed to fostering interest, understanding, and research regarding the contributions of the working men and women of Michigan. This collection consists of records relating to MLHS research, events, and commemorative efforts, with the bulk of the records pertaining to the Michigan Labor Legacy Project, an art installation commemorating worker contributions to Detroit and Michigan.

North Cass Community Union Records

The North Cass Community Union Records reflects the organization’s involvement, officially beginning in 1978, in community advocacy, development, and service to the North Cass neighborhood. Important subjects include: the Detroit Incinerator, Dally in the Alley, the Dodge Carriage House Restoration, tenant advocacy, University City, and the Cass Corridor Food Co-op.

Rosedale Park Improvement Association Records

The collection gives a glimpse into the management and activities of this organization and resources available to and the expectations of the neighborhood's residents.

This collection consists of materials from numerous organizations gathered by Wayne State University professor José Cuello.
