Helen T. Suchara was a professor at Wayne State University’s College of Education from 1956 to 1981. During her time as a professor and even after her retirement, Helen served leadership positions for many different councils and committees, including the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, the University Council for Wayne State University, the Association of Childhood Education International, and many more. Helen wrote numerous publications, travelled overseas for teaching assignments, and served in the Peace Corps.

William P. Sosnowsky Papers

After receiving his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate from the Wayne State University College of Education, William Paul Sosnowsky joined the college faculty in 1965. As unofficial historian of the College of Education, Sosnowsky took a particular interest in the history of the founding of the college and the university at large. This collection contains Sosnowsky’s research on the founding of the college, which began as the Detroit Normal Training School and later became the Detroit Teacher’s College. It also contains Sosnowsky’s research on Amanda Parker Funnelle, the Detroit Normal Training School’s founding principal. After spending decades researching this topic, Sosnowsky maintained that the Detroit Normal Training School originated before 1881, the date officially accepted by the university.

Ruth Ellsworth was a professor of Social Studies Education at Wayne State University in the College of Education from 1949 to 1977. She served on several committees at Wayne State University such as Wayne State University Retirement Committee, the Wayne State University Council Public Relations Committee, the Wayne State University Calendar Committee, Wayne State University's Quarter System Committee, and Wayne State University's Committee on Teacher Education. This collection is comprised of the papers from these committees and the work that she contributed.

Wayne State University Detroit Teachers College Records

The Detroit Teachers College was an outgrowth of the Detroit Normal Training School which had its beginning in 1881. By 1920, due to increased enrollment and demand for more course offerings, Superintendent of Schools, Frank Cody, recommended that the Normal School become the Detroit Teachers College. Stuart Courtis was appointed dean.

Wayne State University College of Education, Dean’s Office: Detroit Public Schools Monitoring Commission on Desegregation Records

The Detroit Public Schools Monitoring Commission on Desegregation was created by the City of Detroit to comply with the ruling of Milliken v. Bradley, which dealt with desegregation busing. This United States Supreme Court ruling settled the issue of de jure vs. de facto segregation and effectively confirmed that segregation was allowed if it was not an explicit policy of the school district. As a result, the commission's charge was to oversee the busing plan across multiple school districts in the city of Detroit. Wayne State University College of Education faculty served on the commission.

The records of the Monitoring Commission detail commission activities as well as those of the various subcommittees within, including student codes, executive committee reports, and profiles of Detroit Area Schools.

Gerald Boicourt Papers

Gerald Boicourt began his career working with students as the Assistant Superintendent at the Salt Lake City Boys’ Detention home from 1940 to 1941. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1941 to 1946. Upon his return home, he taught English in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, from 1946 to 1949. From there, he began as a research specialist for the State University of Iowa, and transitioned to the Supervisor of School Buildings for the Iowa Department of Public Institutions from 1950 to 1952. He continued his career in education at Wayne University in 1953 as an assistant professor in the College of Education. The university promoted him to an associate professor position in 1954, and then promoted him again to the professor of Education Administration in 1964.

During his tenure at Wayne State University, Dr. Boicourt served as the Director of Community College Survey from 1958 to 1962 and as a member of the Interdepartmental Administrative Group. Dr. Boicourt also conducted a six-county study of community college needs in the Metro Detroit region from 1959 to 1960, as well as an Oakland County study of community colleges in 1962. Additionally, he directed Wayne State’s study of community college students in cooperation with University of Southern California’s nationwide study and served on the advisory committee for Wayne State’s Educational Council from 1966 to 1967. In regards to his work as a professor, Dr. Boicourt taught courses regarding problems in metropolitan school administration and internship experiences in school plant planning.

Moreover, Dr. Boicourt worked as a consultant for Metro Detroit school districts including: Redford Union, South Redford, Hazel Park, Inkster, Detroit, Berkley, and Gibraltar. He also consulted for multiple school districts in Iowa, as well as for Springfield School District in Illinois.

Because of Dr. Boicourt’s focus on the administration of schools and his consultant work for Metro Detroit schools, this collection primarily contains administrative reports and school planning documents. This collection also contains clippings, correspondence, and research all related to his professional work within education administration.

Wayne State University College of Education Audio-Visual Consultation Bureau Records

The records of the College of Education’s Audio-Visual Consultation Bureau, directed by Arthur Stenius. The collection documents the Bureau’s production of educational movies and slide strips and accompanying printed material on a variety of subjects. It also reflects the use of visual material in classrooms as well as developments in teaching methodology in the 1950’s.

The College of Education Building Committee Records detail the planning and events involved in the construction of the College of Education Building at Wayne State University. The collection consists of the records of the College of Education Building Committee for which Willard M. Bateson, associate professor in the College of Education, served as chairman, and records from the College of Education’s Column Raising Ceremony. The Column Raising (or cornerstone laying) Ceremony for the new College of Education Building was held on Thursday, June 11, 1959. The four-story building, designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, was completed in 1961 and provided 96,000 square feet of space, which allowed the college to centralize its offices and classrooms.

Wayne State University College of Education Teachers’ Corps Records

The Teachers’ Corps was a national organization created in the 1960’s. Its goal was to remedy the teacher shortage in poorer school districts. The program was funded by the National Defense Education Act Institute.The Wayne State University program, sponsored by the College of Education, attempted to generate interest in the Detroit area inner city schools with the hope of recruitment. The interns selected for the WSU Teachers Corps were not required to have four-year degrees in education, only an interest in teaching. Teacher Corps interns would work on a degree in Education while simultaneously gaining practical teaching experience by working with a team of other interns in teaching in the Detroit Public Schools.

The Detroit Normal Training School was founded in 1881 by the Detroit Board of Education in order to train teachers for Detroit's public schools. The Normal School was renamed the Detroit Teachers College in 1920; in 1933, the Detroit Teachers College became the College of Education of the newly formed Wayne University.

These records of the Wayne University College of Education contain teacher placement information from the years 1919-1940. They include Detroit Board of Education placements and assignments, placements of graduates not from the College of Education, cumulative lists, and placement statistics from those years. Additionally, the records contain information on graduates’ placement in the teaching fields, and other statistics regarding their activities before graduating.

The College of Education has functioned continuously since 1881 as a teacher-education institution. It existed as an independent school until 1929, when it became a part of what is now called Wayne State University. It received authority in 1921 from the legislature of the State of Michigan to grant the bachelor’s degree and, in 1929, to grant higher degrees in conjunction with the Graduate Division of the University. The Chairman of General Secondary Education in the College of Education at Wayne State University in the early 1960s was Dr. George L. Miller.

The College of Education, General Secondary Education, Office of the Chairman Records contain paper and photographic materials documenting student life and administrative activities within the General Secondary Education sector of the College of Education. Student-related records include documents and photographs from Freshman Camp and various student groups. Administrative records include information about various committees and projects. The most notable of these projects is the Cooperative Pilot Project in Teacher Education which began in 1958 as an effort to redesign education coursework in the College of Education at Wayne State University in order to better prepare prospective teachers for careers in the education profession.

Wayne State University College of Education G. Harold Silvius Records

G. Harold Silvius joined the faculty of the Wayne University College of Education in 1936, and was a professor of industrial education by 1941. From 1946 to 1971, Silvius served as chairman of the Industrial Education program, creating a nationally recognized program of industrial teacher education. Silvius was a member of Mu Sigma Pi, a graduate professional industrial education fraternity. He retired in 1975.

Materials in this collection consist of reports, yearbooks, programs, correspondence, transcribed speeches, course descriptions, and a history of industrial education.

Wayne State University College of Education Office of Admissions Records

This collection consists of records generated by the Office of Admissions between 1958-1964, largely under the supervision of the College of Education’s Assistant Dean, Joseph E. Hill (1962-1964). During this period Hill served as chairman or member of numerous admissions committees, including the admissions advisory committee and various ad hoc committees on curriculum, instruction, admissions, student teaching, and college administrative problems.

Many of the records from the committees that Hill served with can be found in this collection, as well as information on special and experimental projects, correspondence, commencement information, summaries of College of Education dissertations from 1949-1962, and information regarding the accreditation of teacher education.

Wayne State University College of Education William Reitz Records

William Reitz was a professor in the College of Education from 1937 until his retirement in 1973. He specialized in evaluation and statistics and was an active advisor in the College. Reitz was involved in the creation of a doctoral program and was known for having the most successful Ph.D. candidates in the College of Education; he also served as an examiner for the National Teacher Examination implemented by the College of Education in 1946.

Materials in the this collection consist of meeting minutes, correspondence, faculty seminars, insurance information, student data forms, teacher testing and examinations, reports, publications, committee records, graduate school implementation records, and listings of M.A. and Ph.D. degrees.

Wayne State University Library Science Student Association Records

The Library Science Department was included in the College of Education until 1984, after which it fell under the administration of the Dean of University Libraries. The department was then renamed the Library and Information Science Program in 1993, and in 2009 the Board of Governors created the School of Library and Information Science. This collection contains the Library Science Student Association’s correspondence, programming documents, and financial information from 1962 to 1976.

Hazel E. Graham Papers

Hazel Graham taught Clinical Psychology in the College of Education at Wayne, and was instrumental in the design and implementation of the Master’s Program in Clinical Psychology. Ms. Graham attended the Detroit Teachers’ College, and received her baccalaureate in 1931. She began teaching in Detroit Public Schools from 1931-34.
After earning her MA degree at Wayne in 1934, Ms. Graham joined the College of Education as a substitute instructor in two departments, Psychology and English Education.
She became a special associate professor in 1956, and was promoted to associate professor in 1958, a rank she held until she retired in June, 1970. The collection includes information about World War II, and the YWCA at Wayne (1939-1943).

Wayne State University College of Education Library Science Department Records

The Wayne State University College of Education housed the Library Science Department until 1984, after which it was moved to the administration of the Dean of University Libraries. The name was then changed to the Library and Information Science Program in 1993, and in 2009 the Board of Governors created the School of Library and Information Science.

This collection primarily consists of brief summaries of some of the Library Science Department’s staff between 1963 and 1967, as well as correspondence and interdepartmental memos related to the Library Science Department. The collection includes documents relating to the department’s original accreditation process, which resulted in the program’s accreditation in 1967.

Paul Lutzeier Papers

The papers of Paul Lutzeier reflect his work with the Otherlanders Program, the College of Education, and his work with James M. Hare and the Michigan Constitutional Convention. Lutzeier originated the idea for the International Freedom Festival in 1958. Other subjects found in the collection include the Detroit Teachers College and the Michigan Constitutional Convention.
