The tent colony was established by the United Mine Workers during the 1913-1914 coal strike to house miners and families evicted from company housing.

A view of the "Death Pit" in the Ludlow tent colony, where the remains of eleven children and two women killed during the Ludlow Massacre were found.

Pits were dug throughout the colony to provide shelter to the families of the striking miners when gunfights broke out. On April 20, 1914, a day-long fight ensued, resulting in the destruction of the camp. The victims found in this pit were asphyxiated and burned to death when the tent above them caught fire and trapped them underground.
