During World War II, Ensign Frances Moskel, a leader of the nurse’s union at Eloise hospital, Wayne County Michigan AFSCME Local 25, was stationed at the US Naval hospital in San Diego.

This image appeared on the cover of AFSCME’s Journal of State & Local Government Employees November 1943 issue. The caption included this quote from Moskel: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my Navy experiences, but I am eager to board one of our fine ships, to see the sea, and to do some nursing overseas where our forces are really in action.”

William Baran, boatswain’s mate, second class, was a police guard at the Chicago house of corrections and active member of AFSCME Local 211 before enlisting. In the image, he is seen “sounding” his boatswain’s pipe, signifying meal time for his fellow sailors.

Sergeant PJ Supina, United States Marine Corps and member of AFSCME Local 391. Supina worked as a prison guard for civilian prisoners in Wethersfield, Connecticut and then served as a guard for military prisoners in Portsmouth, New Hampshire during World Ward II.
