George B. "Shorty" Sherman, served as WSU's athletic business manager from 1938-1972. During this time, Sherman also served in the capacity of sports information director from 1939-1946. In his 34 years of service to the University, Sherman performed hundreds of duties ranging from writing publicity releases and supervising the cheerleaders to lining the field and blowing up the football. Born in Boston in 1905, Sherman came to Detroit at the age of two. He graduated from Northern High School and entered City College of Detroit (WSU) in 1924. When he graduated in 1940, City College had become Wayne University. Sherman was president of the College Athletic Business Managers Association (CABMA) from 1967-68, vice president from 1964-67 and secretary-treasurer from 1961-64. It was at this time that Sherman became nationally known for his hard work and dedication to athletics. He received the Citizen's Sportsman Award in 1969 from the Detroit Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. He also won the Athletic Business Managers Award in 1971, the year before he retired. Former Mayor of Detroit, the late Jerome Cavanagh, proclaimed June 9, 1963 as George B. Sherman Day.

The University Relations Division dates back to the early days of the university and reflects the activities of WSU's public relations offices. Undergoing several name changes (Community Relations), reporting structures, and unit services, it maintained a focus on communication and interpretation of the university's work both internal and external to the university. By 1961, photography had become a major facet of public awareness programs. Sixteen years later as part of the Media Services and Information Services units it became integral to conveying university related activities, events, and higher education to the general public through mass media. The collection is largely the output of communications, community, and university relations work conducted under the auspices of the University Relations Division. Depicted are activities, events, and places on or around the university's Detroit campus as well as the people associated with its academic and administrative functions. Student life, from classroom learning to sports; the built environment and physical growth of the campus; and portraits of faculty and staff are particularly well represented.

"The Collegian," the student-run newspaper of Detroit Junior College at Central High, published its first edition on March 6, 1918. At first a semi-monthly paper that printed mostly literary works, by 1922 the paper had become a weekly publication and its focus shifted to news. The paper changed its name in 1924 to "The Detroit Collegian," which reflected the school’s name change to the College of the City of Detroit. The paper underwent three further name changes: in 1953, the name changed to "The Wayne Collegian"; in 1957, the name changed to "The Daily Collegian"; and finally, in 1967, the name changed to "The South End." The paper also published summer editions: "The Summer Collegian" (1943-1967) and "Summer South End" (1968-present). The Wayne State University: The South End Newspapers Photographs consist of two series that reflect different periods in the paper's life - "The Daily Collegian" (1950-1960) and "The South End" (1970-1990).
