UFW Canadian Boycott: Toronto Office Audio-Visual Collection

One of the largest boycott offices in Canada was located in Toronto. Coordinated by Bill Masterson, Jessica Govea, Marshall Ganz and others, the Toronto boycott staff and volunteers, including religious and student groups, led a successful campaign against the sale and shipment of non-union grapes in Canada.

The audio-visual collection consists of a number of posters, bumper stickers, audio tapes and a few photographs that document UFW activities in Toronto during the time of the UFW Grape Boycott in the 1970s.

Collection Spotlight: UAW Local 174 Mural

In 1937, United Auto Workers Local 174 sponsored the creation of a series of murals to enliven their Union Hall and celebrate their rich, if relatively young, history. The resulting work proved to be one of the most memorable pieces of Detroit’s New Deal-era artwork. read more »

A view of the Walter Speck mural, “Untitled.” The mural, painted in 1937 for UAW Local 174, depicts scenes from the union’s history. The mural was donated to Wayne State University in 2015 and is currently on display in the Reuther Library’s Reading Room.
