Hunger Action Coalition of Michigan Records

This organization began as the Southeastern Michigan Food Coalition (SEMFCO). It was founded in 1977 by local groups who were concerned with the hunger problem in the United States. They thought that collaboration between the emergency food providers and other groups would be the best way to take on the challenges. In the beginning there was one sole employee in SEMFCO but in time the organization grew to at least 6 staff members. Over time a slideshow was developed and newsletters and bulletins were sent out by the organization to educate and inform.

SEMFCO was compiled of a number of committees and task forces, and an example of that is the Emergency Food Providers’ Council, which became part of SEMFCO in 1978, and was created in order to assist with problems with food stamps. SEMFCO was also involved in a number of different undertakings to try and help those in need and the organizations helping those individuals. In 1984, the Emergency Food Communication Network was created, which was a SEMFCO/United Community Services (UCS) collaboration, to help facilitate information transmission from different groups that was important during the economic downturn. Two years later, UCS was no longer involved. Eventually SEMFCO became the Hunger Action Coalition of Michigan.

Nancy vom Steeg Papers

Nancy vom Steeg was a Detroit activist during the 1960s through the 1980s. Though Poletown might have been the more well-known issue of the time, Nancy was a part of several movements, such as food coops, environmentalism, women and religion, and consumer protection.

North Cass Community Union Records

The North Cass Community Union Records reflects the organization’s involvement, officially beginning in 1978, in community advocacy, development, and service to the North Cass neighborhood. Important subjects include: the Detroit Incinerator, Dally in the Alley, the Dodge Carriage House Restoration, tenant advocacy, University City, and the Cass Corridor Food Co-op.

This collection contains 57 issues of the Co-op Crier newsletter of the Metro Co-Op in Detroit headquarted at 9025 Mackinaw St in the Petosky Otsego neighborhood. The Metro Co-op often partnered and met with the Northwestern Co-op. Dates of Co-op Crier issues range from May 1939-September 1941.
