Strikeless Strikes by Teachers

Selden addresses the unwillingness to call a strike a strike. He explains that teachers or participants in strikes will often call them "recesses," "holidays" or "disputes." He says that the term "strikes" makes the participants feel naughty. Selden says that refusal to work is not necessarily a strike. He then goes on to explain what constitutes a strike and what does not.

Ten AFT Strikes

Selden talks about the need for a consistant policy on work stoppages when it comes to collective bargaining and teacher strikes. He mentions ten AFT strikes that happened between the years 1964-1966. These are as follows: East St. Louis, IL, Pawtucket RI, Louisville KY, Hamtramck MI, South Bend IN, Perth Amboy NJ, Newark NJ, New Orleans LA, Plainview NY (Long Island), and Thornton Township IL.
