Of note in series II there are contract language for community education and charter schools. The OFT was chartered in June 1952 and during that decade was successful in securing teacher tenure laws. During the 1960s and 1970s the OFT grew in size by organizing more workers in K-12, community college and higher education in faculty, nurses and classified positions. In the 1990s the OFT changed its’ name by convention to the Oregon Federation of Teachers, Education and Health Professionals (OFTHEP). The OFTHEP continued to help with locals in the state with bargaining, grievances and arbitrations.<br /> The records of Oregon Federation of Teachers consist of correspondence and other materials relating to nurse, hospitals, health professionals, public employees, k-12 teachers as well as higher education faculty and staff. The American economy was in recession and national politics were not hospitable to organized labor. Yet, SEIU grew by 500,000 members. By 1992, SEIU reached the million-member mark. The membership achievements of SEIU can be largely credited to the efforts of its Organizing Department. The primary responsibility of the SEIU Organizing Department was to organize the unorganized. The SEIU Organizing Department sought to gain new membership for the International through targeting building service, healthcare, clerical and public sector employees. Additionally, the Organizing Department gained new SEIU members through the affiliation of formerly independent organizations and unions. </p> <p>Records from this collection chronicle the expansion of SEIU through organizing campaigns and affiliations, during a period when American organized labor was contracting.
