Detroit Coalition to End the War Now! Records

In 1969 supporters of the peace movement gathered to discuss Detroit participation in a national convention of the New Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam (New Mobe). The result of this gathering was the formation of the Detroit Coalition to End the War Now! (DCEWN). This group became one of the most influential anti-war organizations both in Detroit and nationwide. The Coalition was highly visible by means of demonstrations, teach-ins, press coverage, leaflets and mailings. It also generated a great deal of public involvement and support.

The papers in Part 1 primarily consist of correspondence, mailings and other general
materials of the workings of DCEWN, with a portion pertaining specifically to NPAC.

Part 2 of the collection consists mainly of materials that cover the organization efforts for the
large scale mobilizations of the NPAC and DCEWN in Oct. 1970 and April-May 1971. There
are also anti-war news publications, clippings, and correspondence from James Lafferty.
Materials from various other anti-war organizations are also represented in the records.

UAW Local 887 Records

Local 887 of the United Auto Workers was borne out of labor struggles between its predecessor union, UAW-CIO Local 683, and North American Aviation in Los Angeles, CA shortly before American involvement in WWII. Because of the company's production of military aircraft, the federal government has historically been closely involved with labor disputes affecting Local 887's members.

The records of UAW Local 887 reflect the union's long struggle with management over such issues as wages and union rights. Part 1 contains information relating to cases with the National War Labor Board, the National Labor Relations Board and the Wage Stabilization Board. Part 2 contains mainly Executive Board and Joint Council minutes, as well as individual unit minutes. Also included are correspondence, negotiations and agreements.

UAW President's Office: Howard Young Records

Howard Young began working for the UAW in 1960, as an Actuarial Consultant and later became the Director of the Social Security Department. Later in his UAW career, his main function was as Special Consultant to the President, but he also worked as a member of the Pension Research Council, Director of Social Security, Director of the Research, and Director of Information Systems. He worked for the UAW from 1960-1971 and again from 1974-1987. During that time he worked under four UAW presidents: Reuther, Woodcock, Fraser and Bieber. His work included collective bargaining, public policy on economic and social programs (job and income security, pensions, and benefits), international trade, the impact of technological change on workers, and federal policy regarding energy and automobile standards.

The UAW President’s Office: Howard Young Records consist of the chronological, subject and meeting files of Howard Young during his tenure in various positions at the UAW. The Chronological files combine the correspondence and research from his position as Special Consultant with those from his positions as Director of Social Security, Director of the Research, and Director of Information Systems. The subject files cover a range of topics with emphasis on pensions, auto emissions, international trade, technology, and Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors. The meeting files consist of the correspondence, presentations, speeches, and testimony of Howard Young to a wide range of organizations, college classes, conferences and government committees and subcommittees. A gap in the records exists from mid 1971 through late 1974, a period when he was not employed with the UAW.

Coleman Young Papers

With a background in labor activities and civil rights, Coleman Young captured a Michigan State Senate seat in 1964, representing an east side Detroit district, and rose quickly to leadership posts in the Lansing legislature. Michigan Democrats elected him in 1968 to become the first black member ever to serve on the Democratic National Committee. In 1973, pledging to restore peace between the people and police of Detroit, Coleman Young announced as a candidate for Mayor of Detroit. He defeated the City's former police chief, John Nichols, in a bitter election contest in January 1974 and was re-elected in 1977,
1981, 1985 and 1989. He was one of the first African-Americans to be elected mayor of
a major U.S. city and served a total of twenty years. He was considered by many of his
constituents as a champion of the disadvantaged and disenfranchised. During Young’s
mayoral years, the city of Detroit faced numerous economic, political and social
challenges.
