AAUW Detroit Records

The American Association of University Women Detroit (AAUW Detroit) is a branch of the AAUW, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower women and improve their lives. Established in 1889, AAUW Detroit is the oldest branch of the AAUW of Michigan. It is also the oldest continuously active women’s organization in Detroit. They advocate for issues related to education, politics and economics, promoting their mission through education, and research. They also maintain leadership development and mentoring programs for local women and girls.

The AAUW Detroit Records are mostly comprised of scrapbooks containing organizational records, correspondence, press clippings, photographs of meetings, and other various items documenting the branch’s history. There are also info packets from conferences hosted by the AAUW Detroit or attended by its members. These packets contain schedules, draft AAUW bylaws, information on event speakers, and other documents. Also scattered throughout the collection are issues of Leader in Action: AAUW National Leadership Magazine, mailers, brochures, and bound organizational records.

AFSCME Program Development Department Records, Part 1 & 2

The AFSCME Program Development Department was created in January of 1973 to deal with matters such as health care, the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill, employee protections, career development, and sex discrimination. It was funded by federal grant money until 1975 when the funds ran out, the department was disbanded, and its several functions were taken over by other AFSCME departments.

The records in Part I reflect the Department's concerns with women's issues, sex discrimination, the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), and other groups. Important figures represented are Linda Tarr-Whelan, deputy director, 1973-1975; her successor, Nancy Perlman; and International President Jerry Wurf. Important topics appearing in the records include affirmative action, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, International Women's Year, Title IX, and commissions on the status of women.

The records in Part II of this collection contain the administrative records of the Program
Development Department head and staff. A large portion of Part II is devoted to subject
files, which illustrate the broad scope of the Department’s focus. Part II also contains
records pertaining to the Department’s efforts to prevent the decentralization of mental
health institutions and to protect the employees that worked in those facilities. Files on
other health care related issues are also included in Part II. A few files related to
Women’s Issues that were missed when processing Part I also appear.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra Hall, Inc. Records

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) grew out of an attempt by a group of ten young women in 1914 to provide Detroit with culture. A permanent home, Orchestra Hall, was built in 1919 by C. Howard Crane. The DSO performs regular subscription and special concerts, as well as provides a number of special events and programs outside of Orchestra Hall. The records of the DSO relate its administration, marketing, and public relations, as well as the orchestra's community outreach, cultural activities, and influence of its music directors.

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn Papers

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) as a high school student in 1906, but left school a year later to dedicate herself to organizing full time. A gifted and popular speaker, over the next several years she participated in IWW free speech and legal defense fund-raising campaigns and helped organize the Lawrence and Paterson textile strikes. A tireless defender of labor and political agitators facing deportation, Ms. Flynn helped found the ACLU in 1920, only to be expelled in 1940 for having joined the Communist Party three years earlier. She also wrote and lectured extensively on women’s issues. In the mid-1950s she was imprisoned for violation of the Smith Act and in 1961, became the first woman to serve as chair of the U.S. Communist Party, a position she held until her death in Moscow on September 5, 1964.

The Elizabeth Gurley Flynn Collection consists primarily of family correspondence, mostly letters she wrote to her nephew, Peter Martin, while in prison and while traveling in the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and the western United States in the 1960s. While its content largely concerns family and personal matters, including her health, it also contains some political commentary as well as her impressions of prison life and the places she visited.

Folklore Archive: Student Field Projects Photographs

The Folklore Archive, established in 1939 by WSU English professors Emlyn Gardner and Thelma James, contains the oldest and largest record of urban folk traditions in the United States. To document these traditions, Wayne State University students conducted field research projects, some of which included photographic records. Collection consists of 71 projects (or aggregations of multiple projects on a single topic) conducted by student interviewer-collectors. Student field research projects cover a broad range of topics, with strengths in cultural object analysis, including quilting, artwork, Slavic eggs, and various handicrafts. There are several images of Edvard Kozak, a Ukrainian artist. The cultural diversity of the Detroit area is expressed in representations of Middle Eastern, Lebanese, Ukrainian, Greek, Italian, French-Canadian, German, Czechoslovakian, and African-American persons and their customs.

Erma Henderson Papers

Erma Henderson first ran for Detroit Common Council in an unsuccessful bid in 1969. However, she was successfully elected in 1972 and served on the Council through 1989. Through her work as a Councilwoman, Henderson was often considered to be one of the most powerful women in Detroit. In addition to her City Council work, Henderson was also very active in a number of organizations that aligned with her interests, particularly municipal government, redlining, civil rights, and advancing the rights and representation of minorities. This collection documents her work for and service to many organizations including Equal Justice Council, National League of Cities, Michigan Statewide Coalition Against Redlining, and the Women's Conference of Concerns. This collection also contains some material from Henderson's tenure on the Council. The material is primarily correspondence based, but also includes daily calendars, news articles, resolutions, among other work documents.

Polly Howe Papers

Polly Howe worked for much of her career as a teach in Livonia and Dearborn Public Schools. She was an active member of the American Federation of Teachers and served on their Women's Rights Committee from 1987-1991. Howe was also a founding member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) and helped found the Metro-Detroit Chapter. CLUW helped found the Michigan Pay Equity Network (PEN) in 1985 to study pay inequities among state employees. The organization has worked for over 30 years to try and eliminate sex and race based wage discrimination. An active participant of PEN, Howe served as a State Coordinator and aided in organizing the founding conference. Over her years of involvement with PEN, Howe organized a number of other conferences and rallies throughout the state. She also served as Chair of PEN in 2005.

This collection primarily contains material related to pay equity, though there is a small amount of information on the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) 10th anniversary. Some of the pay equity material is directly a product of Michigan Pay Equity Network (PEN) including correspondence, mailings, and photographs from a rally. Other material in this collection includes draft legislation, equal pay proclamations, and literature from organizations with similar goals, as well as from labor unions and the U.S. Department of Labor.

International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists Records

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) held the first International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES) June 15-21, 1964, to coincide with the SWE National Convention and the 1964 World's Fair in New York City, New York. Although ICWES planners originally estimated 300 participants, the conference brought together over 500 people from more than 35 countries to discuss the role of women engineers and the future of engineering. Following the success of the first ICWES (later referred to as ICWES I), women's science and engineering societies have hosted a total of 14 ICWES conferences in 11 countries.

The materials in these records document the origin and development of ICWES, as well as the technical and sociological subjects discussed at the conferences. Compiled from members of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), these records document the planning and execution of the the first and seventh ICWES conferences (ICWES I and ICWES VII) held in 1964 and 1984, which were hosted by SWE. The records also document SWE's involvement with ICWES conferences hosted in other countries. Records include correspondence, reports, clippings, proceedings, and bound volumes.

Viola Liuzzo Papers

On March 25, 1965, Viola Liuzzo, a Wayne State University student and mother, was shot and killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan after participating in civil rights protests in Alabama. The impact of Liuzzo’s death was felt across the country. Despite a FBI informant's eyewitness testimony at the trial of the three Klansmen, none of the men were found guilty of murder. Liuzzo's family, as well as two civil rights workers involved in the 1965 protest, would later file unsuccessful suits against the U.S. government based on this FBI informant's involvement in the incident. Speculation about the exact nature and circumstances of Liuzzo’s murder continues.

The Viola Liuzzo Papers contain documentation of the events surrounding the murder of Liuzzo, the resulting investigation, and later litigation on behalf of the Liuzzo Family. They include FBI murder investigation files, legal precedents to the 1980s lawsuit, related legal motions and proceedings, correspondence, and depositions from FBI handlers, expert witnesses, and eyewitnesses. The collection also contains the fulfilled Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (FOIPA) requests for the FBI's involvement with the Ku Klux Klan, FBI policy, information about the Liuzzo family, and a portion of documents related to the Freedom Riders.

Society of Women Engineers Detroit Section Records

The Society of Women Engineers was founded in 1950 to encourage young women to pursue engineering and to support women engineers throughout their careers. The Detroit Section of the Society of Women Engineers was chartered June 30, 1952. SWE Detroit is one of the Society's oldest sections and is also among its largest, largely due to the prominence of the automotive and manufacturing industries in southeastern Michigan. The Society of Women Engineers Detroit Section Records include section bylaws, correspondence, meeting minutes, membership files, section newsletters, news clippings, publications about women in engineering, photographs, and scrapbooks.

UAW Region 7: Canadian Office Records

United Auto Workers Canadian Region 7 began the same year as the international union and was recognized by all major automotive manufacturers in the early 1940s. With a reputation for being militant, the union grew to be the largest in Canada, pioneering pension security, guaranteed annual wages, pre-paid medical prescriptions, and wage parity for workers in the country. Their records reflect the organization and activities of this regional office, including those of two of its directors, George Burt and Dennis McDermott.

Urban Environment Conference (UEC) Records

The Urban Environment Conference (UEC) grew out of an effort in 1971 by Michigan Senator Philip Hart to provide a forum for the discussion of problems and issues of joint concern to urban reform groups, environmentalists, and organized labor. Within a year, most of the participants decided to organize the group as a non-profit corporation with both advocacy and clearinghouse functions, including lobbying, education and publicity, fundraising, leadership training, technical assistance on program development, and coalition-building. While protecting on-the-job and community health has been the Conference’s priority issue, UEC also has a notable record on energy, mass transit, fair housing and full employment.

The Urban Environment Conference Collection consists of correspondence, reports, minutes,
clippings and publications related primarily to environmental/occupational health issues affecting minorities at home and in the workplace.

Wayne State University Faculty Wives' Club Records

The Faculty Wives' Club of the College of the City of Detroit was founded in 1925, preceding Wayne University by ten years. This group's mission, as stated in its 1953 constitution, was "to promote friendship among the faculty wives of Wayne University, to further the interests of the women of Wayne University, and to engage in such civic activities as are appropriate to the nature of the organization." In addition to its frequent meetings, receptions, and tours, the Faculty Wives' Club provided small scholarships to female students of Wayne. New membership dropped sharply in the 1970s, although there was no sharp increase in the number of existing members letting their memberships lapse. The Faculty Wives Club of Wayne State University officially disbanded in 1995.

Newsletters, meeting minutes, scrapbooks, constitutions and by-laws, correspondence, photographs, committee files and officers' files of the Faculty Wives' Club of Wayne State University (1955-1995), Wayne University (1935-1955), and the College of the City of Detroit (1926-1935).
