 <title>Gabriel Alexander Papers</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Attorney Gabriel Alexander served with the Region XI National War Labor Board and the National Wage Stabilization Board during World War II.  In the private sector he served in the American Arbitration Association, and acted as arbitrator for cases such as General Motors and the UAW from 1948 to 1956, and as a permanent arbitrator for Great Lakes Steel-United Steelworkers.  The papers of Mr. Alexander reflect his work in both the government and private sector as it relates to the interaction between union and management.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Part I contains government service files documenting Mr. Alexander&#039;s role as hearing officer, public panel member, or advisor in labor matters of importance to state and federal government agencies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Part II contains private sector case files documenting Mr. Alexander&#039;s role as an arbitrator or referee in  dispute cases.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Roy M. Brown Papers</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Mr. Brown worked toward the development of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) in California. In 1936 he served as recording secretary of Lodge 1484 and business representative of the newly formed Lodge 1126. He helped organize and became president of the first California Conference of Machinists in 1938, and, by 1942, became a general vice-president of the IAM. Speeches, clippings, and other materials on the aircraft industry; National War Labor Board; UAW-IAM No Raid Agreements; Fry Audit; and Brown&#039;s campaign for general secretary-treasurer are included. Among the correspondents are A.J. Hayes, Asby McGraw, Thomas McNett, H .L. Mitchell, and Leonard Woodcock.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Richard T. Frankensteen Papers</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Mr. Frankensteen served as president of the Automotive Industrial Workers Association, one of the independent attempts to organize the auto industry in the early 1930&#039;s. He later served as president of UAW Dodge Local 3. In 1937 he was elected a vice-president of the UAW-CIO. Correspondence, speeches, clippings, and other materials on the Ryan Aeronautical Company Strike (1944); the National War Labor Board; North American Strike (1941); factionalism within the UAW-CIO; activities of the UAW during the late 1930s and early 1940s, and Mr. Frankensteen&#039;s unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Detroit in 1945 are included. Among the correspondents are George Addes, Adolph Germer, Homer Martin, and Philip Murray. An oral history interview with Mr. Frankensteen is available.&lt;/p&gt;

 <title>Mildred Jeffrey Papers</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Mildred &quot;Millie&quot; Jeffrey worked as an organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, as Educational Director of the Pennsylvania Joint Board of Shirt Workers, as a consultant to the War Labor Board, as Director of the United Auto Workers (UAW) Women’s Bureau, and as Director for UAW Community Relations and Consumer Affairs Departments.  Ms. Jeffrey was also active in the Democratic Party and was a founding member and chair of the National Organization of Women’s (NOW) political arm, the National Women’s Political Caucus.  &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Part 1 of Ms. Jeffrey’s papers document her extensive work for women’s rights and the labor movement and reflect her commitment to social justice. Part 2 primarily documents the last 30 years of her life during which Jeffrey became an activist in the many social and political movements of the time, including women’s rights, civil rights, reproductive rights and peace.&lt;/p&gt;

 <description>&lt;p&gt;Clippings, briefs, transcripts, correspondence, notes, and other materials gathered by Mr. Haughton, who served with the U.S. Social Security Board (1941-42); the Detroit and National War Labor boards (1942-45); the U.S. Conciliation Service (1946-47); the Institute of Industrial Relations at the University of California at Berkeley (1947-50); as impartial arbitrator for the UAW and Ford Motor Company (1950-55); and, with Wayne State University, first as director of the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations and later as vice-president for Urban Affairs. Mr. Haughton also served as co-arbitrator for the dispute involving the DiGiorgio Corporation, the National Farm Workers Association, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, and the Teamsters Union. He was appointed president of the Board of Mediation for Community Disputes in New York City in 1970, and also mediated teachers&#039; strikes in Detroit. Subjects discussed include campus disputes, collective bargaining for farm workers, and strikes by public employees. Among the correspondents are Edmund Brown, Cesar Chavez, Robert DeGiorgio, William Kirchner, and George Murphy.&lt;/p&gt;
