AFT Southern Regional Office Records

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), was founded in 1916 to improve the working lives of teachers through-out the country and has grown to be one of the largest unions in the United States that is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. The southern regional office is one of five satellite offices of the AFT. The southern region represents teachers from elementary school through higher education, paraprofessionals, and school-related personnel who are members of the AFT in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington D.C. The function of the office is to assist in organizing local affiliates in the region, help with negotiations, lend support in various education reform initiatives and train AFT members in the region.

The majority of the office’s records consist of correspondence between locals, school districts, and the AFT. These records also give detailed information on organizing campaigns and negotiating contracts. Other materials include state constitutions, education related issues, lawsuits, legal decisions, state and federal legislation, pamphlets, salary information, news releases, newspaper articles, and union newsletters.

Brookwood Labor College Records

Brookwood Labor College was a co-educational, residential workers' institution founded in 1921 in Katonah, New York. The curriculum focused on a progressive, non-factional education for workers, as the college sought to play an increasing role in the task of building a militant, intelligent, powerful labor movement. The records document the operation of the college during its sixteen years. Brookwood College closed in 1937.

Nat Weinberg Papers

Nat Weinberg worked as a teacher on Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers education projects, as a researcher for the International Ladies Garment Workers Unions, and for several federal bureaus, prior to becoming the United Auto Workers (UAW) Director of Special Projects and Economic Analysis. Mr. Weinberg pioneered the concepts of the guaranteed annual wage and supplemental unemployment benefits.
Part 1 of Mr. Weinberg’s papers primarily relate to his work for the UAW, particularly on the subject of the guaranteed annual wage, and to a lesser degree, his work for various government agencies, including the War Production Board and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, regarding labor conditions and the reemployment of veterans.
Part 2 of the Nat Weinberg Collection relates to Mr. Weinberg’s work as director of the UAW’s Special Projects unit and to his work as a consultant to the United Nations on international economics and labor. Defense conversion, Democratic Socialism, the International Metalworkers Federation, International Fair Labor Standards, multinational corporations and The National Committee on Supplies and Shortages are among important subjects addressed in the collection.

Workers' Education Local 189 Records

Workers Education Local 189, American Federation of Teachers, was founded in November 1922 as the bargaining agent for the faculty members of Brookwood Labor College. After Brookwood closed its doors in 1937, Local 189 opened its membership to all persons, regardless of geographic location, who were engaged in workers' education. Throughout its existence Local 189 had been active in distributing workers' education materials to other members of the AFT, and to public schools, colleges and to the community at large. Members developed histories of the labor and civil rights movement. In the 1960s and 1970s Local 189 became vocal critics of the war in Vietnam and of President Nixon and voiced their opinion about the direction of the AFT. When the executive board of the AFT passed a resolution limiting locals to one geographic area, Local 189 would not abide by this and disaffiliated from the AFT in 1977.
The papers reflect the activities of the union in promoting workers' education, developing standards for workers' educators and supporting various progressive causes. The collection also documents the controversy which led disaffiliation from the AFT.

Podcast: "Democracy is Sweeping Over the World:" Brookwood Labor College at the Nexus of Transnational Radicalism in the Jazz Age

While the 1920s are often described as "lean years" of progressive action, Andreas Meyris explains how the Brookwood Labor College in Katonah, New York served as a conduit for transnational radicalism in the 1920s while also training labor journalists and up-and-coming labor leaders like Walter Reuther and Rose Pesotta, setting the stage for the explosion of industrial unionism during the 1930s. read more »
