Jack Barbash Papers

Jack Barbash held positions in the federal government, the labor movement, and academia, serving in departments such as the U.S. Office of Education, the Department of Labor, and the National Labor Relations Board. Mr. Barbash served as Research and Education Director for the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union and for the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Industrial Union, and served a term as president of the American Association of University Professors University of Wisconsin branch.

Mr. Barbash’s papers consist of secondary sources related to the labor movement and radical organizations. Important subjects include Bureau of Labor Statistics, Social Security, the Socialist Party of America, the Wage Stabilization Board, and the War Production Board.

Richard Jensen Papers

Richard Jensen collected material on dissident movements within the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) and the United Steel Workers of America (USW) while writing his Ph. D. dissertation, “Rebellion in the United Mine Workers: The Miners for Democracy, 1970-1972.” Mr. Jensen’s papers document the rise of dissident groups in the UMW and the USW and their efforts to challenge union leadership.

John L. Lewis Papers

This microfilm edition of the John L. Lewis papers contains his more personal files. Materials included are: correspondence (1907-69) with letters from Amelia Earhart, Dwight D. Eisenhower, J. W. Harriman, and Lyndon B. Johnson; speech drafts and printed copies of speeches and reports (1912-57); UMWA financial and travel notebooks (191 1-26), which show Lewis's rise from AFL representative to UMWA president; photos of Lewis's public and private life (1901-06, 1960-69); genealogical information (1879, 1906-43); household records (1913-61); and magazine and newspaper clippings.

Original papers are housed at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.

Miners For Democracy Records

Activities of the United Mine Workers Union, 1900-1940's; organizing and unionizing in the automobile and steel industries in the 1930's and 1940's; and the operations and reports of the Sage Foundation are among the subjects included in the collection.
