AFSCME Office of the President: Gerald W. McEntee Records

Gerald W. McEntee became president of AFSCME in 1981. Some of the issues reflected in Part I of this collection include the anti-apartheid movement; health care reform, especially under the Clinton White House; affirmative action; AIDS; presidential politics and union campaign support; international labor relations; and legislative affairs. The records also include information on state locals and councils, AFSCME's relationship to other labor unions and organizations, and AFSCME's judicial panel cases.

Part II of the AFSCME Office of the President: Gerald McEntee Records consists of documents created mostly between 1996 and 2003, while the bulk of Part I was created between 1981 and 1995. As a result, Part II contains evidence of AFSCME’s reactions to changes in the labor movement in a post-NAFTA economy. These changes are evident in the internal functions of AFSCME’s Executive Office, affiliates, and in the union’s work within the AFL-CIO and allied organizations.

CIO Political Action Committee (PAC) Records

The CIO Political Action Committee (CIO PAC) was established in July 1943 to support
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1944 presidential campaign. After the 1944 election, the CIO
maintained PAC as its permanent political action apparatus until the CIO merged with the
American Federation of Labor in 1955. CIO PAC, funded by member contributions, provided
financial assistance to CIO-endorsed candidates and supported pro-labor legislation.
Amalgamated Clothing Workers president Sidney Hillman directed CIO PAC from 1943 until
his death in 1946. When Jack Kroll took over in 1955, CIO PAC merged with Labor’s League
for Political Education and a year later became the newly formed AFL-CIO’s Committee on
Political Education..

The CIO PAC collection consists of correspondence with state CIO PAC offices and numerous
pamphlets and reports on election campaigns and issues of concern to organized labor.

Subjects include: civil rights; Democratic Party politics; elections; labor legislation; national health care legislation; Taft-Hartley Act

Citizen Action Records

Citizen Action (CA) was founded in 1979 by former members of Students for a Democratic Society and the Indochina Peace Campaign as a coalition of state and national liberal consumer and activist groups. It organized door-to-door canvassers to work on the state level promoting CA membership and educating the public on issues such as health care, energy, environmental concerns, and auto insurance. Citizen Action was also active in election campaigns on the local, state and national level to recruit and support candidates who espoused the same ideas on various issues. Citizen Action affiliates, such as Ohio Citizen Action and Connecticut Citizen Action Group, played a key role in get-out-the-vote campaigns and issue-specific canvassing and lobbying, especially regarding health care. On the national level, Citizen Action lobbied Congress and the federal government, often testifying before committees, working to introduce bills and interacting with federal departments and commissions. Citizen Action was shut down in 1997 after a scandal emerged involving illegal funds from the Teamsters.

The records in this collection are primarily from the national office of Citizen Action, though there are documents dealing with issues and activities in specific states. Also among these records are documents from affiliate organizations: Citizens/Labor Energy Coalition (C/LEC) and Energy Action.

Hutzel Hospital Records

In November, 1868, seven members of the Ladies’ Christian Union opened the Woman’s
Hospital and Foundlings’ Home in a tenement at Cass Avenue and Montcalm Street, a private, non-profit institution and the first facility in Detroit dedicated to providing care and shelter for abandoned, widowed and unwed mothers and their babies. In 1965, Woman’s Hospital changed its name to Hutzel Hospital and continued its devotion to research into the diseases of women. It is now part of the Detroit Medical Center, working with other hospitals and Wayne State University Medical School to provide high quality medical care to the Detroit community.

Parts 1 and 2 of the Hutzel Hospital Collection consists of correspondence, minutes, reports, clippings, publicity,biographical information on various directors and board members and other material documenting the history of women’s health care in Detroit.

Mildred Jeffrey Papers

Mildred "Millie" Jeffrey worked as an organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, as Educational Director of the Pennsylvania Joint Board of Shirt Workers, as a consultant to the War Labor Board, as Director of the United Auto Workers (UAW) Women’s Bureau, and as Director for UAW Community Relations and Consumer Affairs Departments. Ms. Jeffrey was also active in the Democratic Party and was a founding member and chair of the National Organization of Women’s (NOW) political arm, the National Women’s Political Caucus.

Part 1 of Ms. Jeffrey’s papers document her extensive work for women’s rights and the labor movement and reflect her commitment to social justice. Part 2 primarily documents the last 30 years of her life during which Jeffrey became an activist in the many social and political movements of the time, including women’s rights, civil rights, reproductive rights and peace.

Rachel Boone Keith Papers

Dr. Rachel Boone Keith came to Detroit from New York City in 1951 after receiving her medical degree from Boston University and was an internist in private practice from that point forward, practicing medicine at several Detroit area hospitals. Dr. Keith served on a number of professional commissions and committees and was active in civic, cultural, and educational organizations, including her work as a lifetime member of the NAACP. Dr. Keith’s papers document her education, professional career, and civic activities as well as containing information on her father’s and mother’s families, the Booths and Tharps, and their service as doctors, missionaries, and religious ministers.

National Organization for Women (NOW): Downriver Chapter Records, Parts I & II

The Downriver chapter of NOW was formed in 1974 by Loretta Moore, a Wayne State University professor, who was elected the chapter’s first president. The chapter was
active in supporting local, state and national policy concerning women’s rights,
participated in marches, rallies and walkathons and also endorsed pro-women’s rights
candidates. They hosted and participated in numerous programs for local women, set up
networks and resources for the community, established a library for members and
published in newspapers as well as their own newsletter. Their membership peaked in
the ERA era with about 100, with their average membership being about 50.

The Chapter's records were assembled by Louise Heck-Rabi, the chapter’s librarian and archivist. Part I reflects the ideology and activities of feminists in the downriver area of Metro Detroit. Part II includes chapter meeting minutes, publicity and press releases, newsletters,
correspondence and mailings, as well as Michigan and National NOW mailings and
programs. Also included are newspaper and magazine clippings relative to the women’s
movement, resources for members and local women, research done by the group and
programs they hosted or participated in.

SEIU Communications Department Records

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) was founded in 1921 as a union of flat janitors. Over the years it has grown in size and scope, and now comprises three divisions: healthcare, property services, and public services. The records of SEIU’s Communications Department document the International’s mass mailings from 1974 through 1987. Included in the collection are (predominately) monthly summaries listing all the mass mailings sent by the International (with the exceptions of June 1983-October 1983, January 1985-March 1985, and January 1986-December 1987) and copies of the individual mass mailings (with the exception of January 1974-June 1976).

These mass mailings collected by the Communications Department were generated by a variety of individuals and departments (including Research and Publications). Topics include human rights and health issues, union resolutions, pensions, politics (including COPE), women (especially 925), scholarships, legislative actions, and various topics relevant to SEIU members. Document formats found within the records include correspondence, memos, articles, newsletters, and flyers.

SEIU Executive Office: John Sweeney Records

For many, John Sweeney is known as the now former head of the AFL-CIO, a position from which he retired in 2009 after 14 years of service. For most of the previous 35 years, though, he was a member turned officer of the Service Employees International Union, having served 15 of those years as its President. The SEIU Executive Office: John Sweeney Records document his tenure during these 15 years, although portions of these records predate his tenure in that office.

The records contain files documenting the activities of SEIU local unions, joint councils and other SEIU affiliates. In addition, the files of SEIU executive board members, vice presidents, divisions, departments and staff members are also found within the collection, often within series identified in this manner. Researchers can also review records documenting the meetings, hearings, conventions and conferences Sweeney attended and at which he often spoke or testified. Records documenting SEIU's conventions from its inception in 1921 until 1992 are also found within these records. The records of the conventions reveal the major policy shifts of the union. Sweeney's interest in healthcare are also found within these records in addition to the union's external relationships with labor organizations and others.

UAW Research Library: Congressional Testimonies

Since the formation of the United Auto Workers Union in 1935, union members have been actively involved in U.S. and international politics. Individual union members, from the highest ranking officer to the newest rank and file member have testified before Congress on issues ranging from trade and health care to housing and public welfare. Beginning in 1938 and ending in 2009 this collection documents the history of UAW members’ appearances before Congressional Committees. This collection consists of Congressional Testimonies, Congressional Reports, and House and Senate Bills that the UAW had influence over. The collection begins in 1938 as the union presented their case before the Senate Select Committee on Investigative Campaign Expenditures and ends in 2009 with the testimony of UAW President Ronald Gettlefinger before the Energy and Commerce Committee. This collection highlights the major contributions of the UAW to U.S. and international politics.

Ernest J. White Papers

Mr. White’s papers reflect his work with the United Postal Service, the SEIU Local 79, and as a health advisory group member of Oakland County.
