AAUP Wayne State University Chapter Records

The Wayne State University American Association of University Professors was formed in 1930. The early activities of the chapter focused on administrative reform and faculty participation in University governance. In May of 1973 WSU AAUP won an election against the Michigan Education Association-affiliated Faculty Association and the WSUFT (Wayne State University Federation of Teachers) to become the faculty collective bargaining representative. Collection materials include records relating to chapter activities and contract negotiations, as well as President Arnold Pilling's notes and diary entries related to the chapter's activities during its formative years, the 1972 election campaign and the first contract negotiations.

Ernest Goodman Papers

A founding member of the Detroit Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, Ernest Goodman served as NLG President, and formed the nation’s first (known) interracial law firm: Goodman, Crockett, Eden and Robb. He was deeply involved with the labor movement and some of its most bitter union organizing struggles and remained committed throughout his career to serving the common man, with clients ranging from Communists, Black Panthers, prison inmates, and African-Americans during the civil rights movement.

Part I of Mr. Goodman’s papers reflect his involvement in civil rights, constitutional law and labor issues, focusing on the Michigan Smith Act trial, the Sherrill School desegregation case, and the Black Panther trial for the murder of a Detroit Police officer.

Part II reflects his activities as counsel in controversial cases, particularly first amendment and civil rights cases, courts martial, deportation and denaturalization, and the 1971 Attica prison uprising. These papers further focus on the events, places, and people who influenced both his personal life and a career spent in service to social justice for the common man.

Part III (Two storage boxes) focuses on various cases, mainly from the 1980s-1990s, Goodman's writings, his work with Wayne State University Law School, and Estonian family correspondence.

Merrill-Palmer Institute: Dr. Pauline Park Wilson Knapp Records

Dr. Pauline Park Wilson Knapp was the president and director of the Merrill-Palmer
Institute from 1952-1967. Knapp received her B.S. in Home Economics from the
University of Kentucky and M.A. and Ph. D in Psychology from Columbia University.
She established the first Child Development Center in Georgia in 1928, was head of the
Department of Family and Life at the University of Alabama from 1941-45 and the Dean
of the School of Home Economics at the University of Georgia from 1946-52. In 1952
she rejoined the Merrill-Palmer Institute as president, returning to the school where she
was previously a student (1920s) and a staff member (1932-41). During her years as
president, Knapp broadened the school’s emphasis on parent education to incorporate
research on human development and increased research on applied child and family
issues. Under her leadership she increased the schools scope, built two new facilities,
The Program Center and the Skillman Center, and oversaw the largest increase in student
enrollment and faculty appointments in the history of the institute.

Knapp’s records cover day-to-day activities and long range programs, as well as the shift
in emphasis the institute underwent during Knapp’s tenure. Included are programs and
correspondence which highlight Knapp’s close relationship with students and supporters
through which she increased the influence of Merrill-Palmer and ensured continued
student enrollment. The collection also covers committees and boards Knapp served on,
Wayne State University Centennial Symposia Records

During the academic year 1967-1968 Wayne State University celebrated the hundredth anniversary of its founding. As part of the commemoration, the University sponsored a series of symposia of national significance under the theme, "The University and Urban Society."
Broadly, the Symposia theme dealt with the urban university and its impact on, and responsibilities to, its urban community. More specifically, the focus of the Symposia was an examination of the problems and issues associated with an increasingly urban society.

The collection consists primarily of the records of Edward Lurie, Wayne State University professor of history, who served as director of the Centennial Symposia, and his assistant, Philip Borden.

Wayne State University Gas House Gang Records

The Gas House Gang was established in 1920 at Wayne State University’s predecessor, the College of the City of Detroit. It was an all-male social organization on the campus. This group continued until 1957. The Gas House Gang was largely a social group for men whose Constitution had four supporting purposes: to support the college to the utmost, to oppose any mode of dress “which is unbecoming to a real man”, to do their best to obtain a high grade of scholarship, and to “respect womanhood to the highest degree”. The collection includes two minutes books, 1920 to 1957 as well two booklets from reunions of the group, 1970 and 1972.

Wayne University Admissions Office and Acting Registrar Records

The Admissions Office and Acting Registrar Records consist of documents concerning incoming veteran students. Enrollment listings, correspondence, reports, statistics, admission interviews, and studies comprise the majority of the records. Two folders relate to the admission and enrollment of relocated Japanese-American ("Nisei," meaning "second-generation") students at Wayne State during World War II.

After the passage of the G.I. Bill in 1944, Wayne University received an influx of incoming veteran students. Dr. Leslie L. Hanawalt was the Acting Registrar and Director of Admissions of Wayne University at this time. In his 1968 book A Place of Light: The History of Wayne State University, he writes about the veteran period: “The body of veteran students that enrolled in American colleges after World War II has often been written about. At Wayne University several generalizations are remembered: the veterans were too numerous and came upon the campus too rapidly; everyone felt an interest in them and desired to help them with counsel and special programs, if necessary; a good many of them were married; they were on the whole patient and easy to deal with; and they performed well as students, on the average probably better than if their formal education had not been interrupted by the war. For the most important fact about them was that they were two or three years older than the average student; they were often clearer about what they wanted, more serious, more used to working, more strongly motivated. These characteristics combined to make the veteran period a bright spot in academic history.”

Nisei students were relocated to Detroit with the aid of the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council and enrolled beginning with the fall 1943 semester. In the summer of 1943 there were five non-evacuee Japanese American students at Wayne State, by the fall of 1943 there were thirteen enrolled Nisei students, and by the winter 1944 semester there were thirty-five relocated Nisei students enrolled.

Wayne University Foundation Records

The Wayne University Foundation was formed in 1938 to receive and administer financial endowments donated to the university. It was the hope of the university that endowment funds would play a large role in providing the necessary financial stability for Wayne to establish itself as a notable academic institution. Although the foundation existed for more than twenty years, it generated no substantial private donations or legacies. It was finally closed out in April of 1961.

The Wayne University Foundation Records include the financial records, reports, ledgers, and meeting minutes of the Wayne University Foundation from 1939 to 1961.

Wayne State University: University Council and Academic Senate Meeting Records

The Detroit Board of Education established the University Council in 1933 in order to facilitate the participation of university faculty in overall planning. The University Council was largely ineffectual until 1939 when it was reorganized under the direction of Vice President David Henry. In 1945, Henry, now President of Wayne University, authorized the University Council to pass judgement in the following areas: "changes in the scope of the University's work, such as the formation of a new school or college; policies related to instruction which are intercollege in their nature; University-wide personnel policies; and broad questions of student welfare." In 1990 the Council was renamed the Academic Senate.

The Academic Senate, as of 2014, is comprised of six members at large elected by the University academic community, and representatives of each school and college, the University Library System, and the Division of Academic Affairs, elected to the Senate in proportion to the number of full-time positions in these units. The Academic Senate currently has 83 members.

This collection consists of meeting minutes, agendas, proceedings, and reports of the University Council (1939-1990) and the Academic Senate (1990-2002).

Wayne State University Alumni Relations Director Homer Strong Records

Homer D. Strong was appointed the first Director of Alumni Relations in 1944 and continued in this position until 1967. He watched the organization grow from a group of approximately 15,000 to more than 80,000 members. During this period, Strong established the basic guidelines for the structure of the Alumni Association. The Alumni Association consisted of a President, First and Second Vice President, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and a Board of Directors who made up the Alumni Advisory Council. This body of elected officials governed the individual college alumni associations. The college and school alumni associations, in this collection, are Education, Law, Medicine, Mortuary Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work. Each was responsible for planning educational, social, and fundraising projects to benefit their respective schools and alumni. The general Alumni Association sponsored various reunions, homecoming activities, publicity for the university, and general fundraising projects such as the War Memorial Mall. The collection contains minutes, correspondence, reports, and financial material relating to the Alumni Association, individual college alumni associations, the regional American Alumni Council activities, Wayne State University publicity and fundraising, and student organizations.
