Michigan Federation of Teachers Records

Parts 1 and 2 consist of correspondence, minutes, and reports. Subjects include Administrative Board meetings; American Federation of Teachers; conventions; Detroit Federation of Teachers; Executive Council meetings; Haven Hill conferences; legislative lobbying activities; membership campaigns; metropolitan teachers' institutes; Michigan AFL-CIO Council; Michigan Constitutional Convention (1961); teachers' salary and fringe benefits surveys; treasurer reports; White House Conference on Children and Youth (1960). Correspondents include Detroit city officials, Michigan congressmen and state officials, and national congressmen and officials including John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Most of the letters are answers to invitations for speaking engagements.
Part III deals mostly with the efforts to organize teachers during the 1960s and 1970s and dealing with the strikes that accompany labor disputes which is represented in the series Locals. There is ample amount of information about the American Federation of Teachers growth and inner workings during the 1960s and 1970s in the convention files; within these files there are not only basic convention materials but also notes from committee work and flyers from various factions within the AFT. MFT was a part of policy in education finances, assessments of teachers and teacher centers and is reflected in files dealing with the department of education and the like. Part III covers a broad range of topics with specific details on education reform in the 1970s, collective bargaining issues for teachers, political structures in Michigan and various issues on civil rights in Michigan, particularly the bussing of students. Series five contains photographs and audio recordings.

Dan Forchione Papers

Dan Forchione was an active member of the UAW from the 1940s until his retirement in 1988. He helped organize UAW Local 542 at the Ford Motor Company forge plant in Canton, Ohio, in the 1940s and served as the Local’s president and bargaining committee chairperson. In 1954 he was appointed an International representative and assigned to the UAW Ford Department staff. He transferred to the UAW Region 2 staff in 1957 and serviced local unions around Ohio. Forchione was elected director of UAW Region 2 and served from 1968 to 1970. He returned to the National Ford Department in the 1970s and served as administrative assistant under UAW vice-presidents Ken Bannon, Donald Ephlin, and Stephen Yokich from 1974 until the 1980s. In this role he was deeply involved in collective bargaining, contract negotiations and union membership, leading the UAW bargaining team in the 1980s in negotiations over job security, profit sharing and worker participation in management.

These papers reflect Forchione’s work primarily in the UAW National Ford Department, but also his work with local unions in Ohio and UAW Region 2. There are records, notes and correspondence from contract negotiations beginning in the 1950s, with the bulk in the 1970s-1980s. There are many documents on the history of specific local unions, the UAW and Ford Motor Company, as well as records of union arbitration cases.

NALC Comptroller's Office Records

The National Association of Letter Carriers Comptroller's Office performed a variety of functions, mostly relating to the administration of the union's finances. The records of this department reflect the tenure of the union's final comptroller, Harold J. Isbell.

NALC Office of the President: Vincent Sombrotto Records

Vincent R. Sombrotto was elected the 16th president of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) in 1978, serving nearly 24 years until his retirement in December 2002. Bolstered by the rank and file movement in the early 1970s, Sombrotto was overwhelmingly elected president following the adoption of reforms he advocated to make the union leadership more responsive to its members. His accomplishments included wage increases, improving working conditions, passing reform of the Hatch Act, and actively promoting community service and charity fund raising including the annual NALC Food Drive.

Parts 1 and 2 of NALC President’s Office: Vincent R. Sombrotto Records document his presidency, beginning with his first term in 1979. The materials in the collection create a cohesive picture of his time in office, detailing day-to-day activities and administration, organizational affiliations, political action, community service, and interaction with the union membership.

Oscar Paskal Collection

Mr. Paskal served on the editorial board of the UAW Local 227 newspaper.

Part 1 documents Local 227, which services the Chrysler-Imperial Plant in Detroit. Records consist of minutes, grievances, Chrysler Corporation notices, agreements, and by-laws collected by Paskal. Part 2 is unprocessed material consisting of publications by the Socialists Workers Party, a Trotskyite political party. These include weekly bulletins published by the party, conference proceedings, and Marxist educational materials which span the years 1932-1952. Also included are a series of cassette tapes entitled “Voices of Labor” which feature excerpts of speeches by various labor leaders.

UAW President's Office: Howard Young Records

Howard Young began working for the UAW in 1960, as an Actuarial Consultant and later became the Director of the Social Security Department. Later in his UAW career, his main function was as Special Consultant to the President, but he also worked as a member of the Pension Research Council, Director of Social Security, Director of the Research, and Director of Information Systems. He worked for the UAW from 1960-1971 and again from 1974-1987. During that time he worked under four UAW presidents: Reuther, Woodcock, Fraser and Bieber. His work included collective bargaining, public policy on economic and social programs (job and income security, pensions, and benefits), international trade, the impact of technological change on workers, and federal policy regarding energy and automobile standards.

The UAW President’s Office: Howard Young Records consist of the chronological, subject and meeting files of Howard Young during his tenure in various positions at the UAW. The Chronological files combine the correspondence and research from his position as Special Consultant with those from his positions as Director of Social Security, Director of the Research, and Director of Information Systems. The subject files cover a range of topics with emphasis on pensions, auto emissions, international trade, technology, and Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors. The meeting files consist of the correspondence, presentations, speeches, and testimony of Howard Young to a wide range of organizations, college classes, conferences and government committees and subcommittees. A gap in the records exists from mid 1971 through late 1974, a period when he was not employed with the UAW.
