Ann Blankenhorn Papers

Ann Blankenhorn investigated and publicized the social and economic conditions in the textile, clothing, and coal mining industries in the 1920s and 30s with special emphasis on women and children. Also included are papers relating to the WPA (1934) and the imprisonment of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn in the 1950s. Important correspondents are Peter Blume and Elizabeth Gurley Flynn. The materials consist of correspondence (1931-68), personal notebooks, diaries, and address books.

Gene Saari Papers

As an active member of the labor movement, Gene Saari worked for the Timber & Sawmill Workers Union Local 15, helped to form the International Union of Mine, Mill & Smelter Workers (IUMMSW, or Mine-Mill), and served as secretary-treasurer of United Copper Workers Union Local 494. Mr. Saari also served as a vice-president of the Michigan State Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), a Mine-Mill international representative, and as an organizer for the United Steelworkers of America.
Mr. Saari’s papers relate to labor issues in the Michigan copper industry, jurisdictional disputes between Mine-Mill and the Steelworkers union, to economic and social conditions in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and to Mr. Saari’s campaigns for public office in the 1940’s. Calumet & Hecla, Inc., Copper Range Railroad Company and Hanna Mining Company are among important subjects in the collections.

Joseph Smith Papers

Joseph Smith played a leading role in the Michigan labor movement, serving several terms as president of the United Mine Workers District 24, and being active in the Michigan Federation of Labor and the state Congress of Industrial Organizations executive board. His papers relate primarily to his activities with the UMWA in Bay City, Michigan.

William E. Trautmann Papers

A founding member and organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), William Trautmann served as secretary-treasurer and on the first IWW executive board. As an IWW organizer, Mr. Trautmann led the 1909 McKees Rocks, Pa. Pressed Steel Car Company Strike and the Lawrence, Mass. textile workers strike of 1912. Mr. Trautmann’s papers include a portion of an unpublished autobiography manuscript describing his experiences with the IWW and his involvement in various factional disputes.

Mary Van Kleeck Papers

Correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, clippings, and published material of Mary Van Kleeck, director of the Commission on Women's Work and Industrial Studies, and associate director of International Industrial Relations Institute of the Russell Sage Foundation. In addition to Miss Van Kleeck's files concerning her work with the Sage Foundation and the Inter-Professional Association are the papers of Knickerbocker Boyd, an architect interested in the relationship of architects with the building trades unions, and Edward Wieck, a colleague of Miss Van Kleeck's at the Sage Foundation. Activities of the United Mine Workers Union, 1900-1940's; organizing and unionizing in the automobile and steel industries in the 1930's and 1940's; and the operations and reports of the Sage Foundation are among the subjects included in the collection.

From the textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts (1912) to the textile strike in Henderson, North Carolina (1959), her writings and activities include the International Women Suffrage Convention (1913); the IWW; child labor; Consumers League; the organization of the Provincetown Players (1915); mining strikes in Michigan and Minnesota (1916); the rise of Hitler; invasion of Poland; postwar conditions in Europe after both world wars; the Scottsboro case; the steel strikes of 1919 and 1936-37; organizational drive of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers (1920-21); the Sacco-Vanzetti case (1920); Palmer raids and criminal syndicalist cases (1921-23); textile strikes in Passaie (1926) and Gastonia (1929); Farmers Holiday Association (1932); migrant workers; automobile sit-down strikes (1936-37); UNRRA (1945-47); the Sinarquistas in Mexico (1949); crime on the New York-New Jersey waterfronts (1950-54). John Walsh Papers

John Walsh was a member of various labor unions, and served as strike committee chairman in the International Longshoreman’s Association, and as an organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Mr. Walsh’s papers consist of correspondence between himself and his brother, Joseph Walsh. The letters convey Joseph Walsh’s observations about the Depression and the events leading up to World War II, and describe the working conditions of laborers, particularly that of miners, and the unemployed in California and the Southwestern United States.

Labor activist and journalist Agnes Burns Wieck served as an organizer for the Women’s Trade Union League, and was a founder and president of the Progressive Miners of America (PMA) Illinois Women’s Auxiliary. Ms. Burns Wieck’s papers document her work as an advocate for women’s rights and the labor movement, particularly concerning the Illinois PMA Women’s Auxiliary.
