He was originally an assembler and machinist for the Ford Motor Company and eventually became an official in UAW Local 400. He later was elected Vice-President of UAW Local 99 and then President of UAW Local 36 at the Ford Assembly Plant.
Michigan Coalition for Human Rights Records

The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights (MCHR) was formed in Detroit in December
1980 by a group of Detroit-area religious leaders representing a broad range of Judeo-
Christian and Muslim denominations. Initially organized with the goal of providing a
liberal alternative to conservative Christian organizations such as The Moral Majority,
the group’s primary issues included racism, militarism, gay rights, unemployment,
poverty, and other socio-economic and local political topics. The organization was dedicated to improving race relations in the Detroit area and promoting social justice and other liberal causes in the state of Michigan and nationwide as well as the promotion of human rights in Africa and other international regions.

The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights Records document its operations and activities
between the organization’s formal inception in 1981 and 2003, with some supplemental
articles and materials on human rights issues from the period of 1975-1980. Materials
reflect the goal of the MCHR to encourage those in the Detroit-area to participate in
events and campaigns promoting better race relations, increased civil liberties, and a
greater respect for human rights abroad. Issues including capital punishment, race
relations in Detroit, gay rights, children’s rights, apartheid in South Africa, US
involvement in Central America, as well as the internal financial operations of the MCHR
are documented.

Throughout his time at the UAW Health and Safety Department, Dr. Michael Silverstein conducted worksite inspections to assist local unions in identifying and controlling workplace chemical and physical hazards and was active in the collective bargaining efforts for safety and health improvements. Silverstein was also integral in the development of many health and safety programs, which included training for local union representatives. In addition, Dr. Silverstein conducted scientific studies and published numerous articles on his findings relating to identifying the causes of cancer in the workplace among UAW members. During his tenure Silverstein helped the union locate and fix hundreds of health hazards, including: inorganic lead, metalworking fluids, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, silica, flame retardants, organic solvents, welding fumes, coke oven emissions, and reproductive toxins.

UAW Local 22 Records

UAW Local 22 began as an offshoot of Detroit’s historic UAW Local 174 in 1945, to accommodate the growth in 174’s membership. Since then, Local 22 is best known for representing auto workers at Detroit’s Clark Street Plant and later the Hamtramck Assembly Plant. It also represented workers at several other Metro-Detroit factories, with a membership surging to 10,000 workers for a time.

The UAW Local 22 Records are made up of publications, statistics on retirees, announcements on layoffs at auto factories, and more. Contract resolutions from the UAW-GM Department, documenting negotiations between the international union and auto company also represent a large portion of the records. Records from UAW Local 15, another Detroit-area local the branched off from Local 174, also reside in the collection.

UAW President's Office: Stephen P. Yokich Records

Stephen Phillip Yokich was President of the UAW from 1994-2002. As president of the union during a time of great change to the auto industry, he oversaw negotiations for increased benefits, expanded the union into new fields, and helped navigate autoworkers through a period of job cuts. The UAW President's Office: Stephen Yokich Records reflect the activities of the union’s offices of President and Vice-President during Yokich’s respective tenures. These records are critical to understanding the activities of the International Union during the late twentieth century, as well as metro Detroit’s labor movement during that same period.

UAW Public Relations Department Photographs and Sound and Video Recordings

Since the United Automobile Workers of America (UAW) was established as an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in August 1935, the union has maintained an office to deal with public relations. At that time, a "Committee on Publication" was formed, which became the "Publication Committee" in April 1936. The Committee subsequently became the "Publicity Department" in August 1936, when the UAW became an independent union affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). This became the UAW's Public Relations Department some years later. The primary purpose of the original Committees and Department was the production of the union's national newspaper, the United Automobile Worker, which became Solidarity in 1957. Over the years, as the UAW grew into a large, powerful union, the P.R. department played an increasingly important role in writing speeches and producing various publications. It also generated large numbers of photographic images, created television advertisements, and issued press releases, delivering the union’s official stance on nearly all issues. In recent years, the P.R. Department has also been responsible for maintaining the union’s social media presence. The collection consists of Audio-Visual material, including photographic prints and contact sheets, videotapes, and audio recordings.

UAW Vice President Jack Laskowski Records

The UAW Vice President Jack Laskowski Records document the Volkswagen Department within the UAW. The records cover business between the International Union, the automobile maker, and three UAW locals. These three locals are sometimes referred to as the Volkswagen Council, and they include Locals 1933, 2055, and 129. Though the materials were sent over by Vice President Lawskowski, they do not document his work at the union. Instead, the records detail when Vice Presidents Martin Gerber and Bill Casstevens oversaw the Department in the eighties and nineties. The records consist of correspondence, memorandum, and negotiating materials.

Leonard Woodcock Papers

Leonard Woodcock was a longtime labor figure who rose to the level of President of the UAW in 1970 and held the position until 1977. He then embarked on a renowned diplomatic career, first leading a mission to recover POW's and remains of those missing in action in Vietnam in 1977, and then serving as Chief of the US Liaison Office to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). While in China, he negotiated with PRC leaders to establish full diplomatic relations between China and the US, officially achieved in late 1978. President Carter appointed Woodcock as the nation’s first ambassador to the PRC in 1979. After leaving the State Department, Woodcock would become a professor at the University of Michigan and was invited around the world to lecture on Sino-American relations and the labor movement. The Leonard Woodcock Papers primarily cover the subject’s time spent in China and his various China-related activities. The earliest of these materials document his efforts working for the US government in Beijing, though also included are records related to visits made to China in the following years to speak on Sino-American relations. Other records reflect Woodcock’s later career as a renowned Sinologist, teaching courses at the University of Michigan and guest lecturing around the nation. Besides Woodcock’s time in China, other topics included are materials from his time as president of the UAW, general correspondence, and serving on the Board of Governors at Wayne State University. Complementing the manuscript materials on Woodcock's diplomatic career in China are 37 oral history interviews on this topic conducted between him and fellow Sinologist Michel Oksenberg.

At the start of 2014, the Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs would like to take a moment to remember the year that's just ended and revisit the content that was added to our website in 2013. It was a banner year for the Reuther's blog, with more visits, visitors, and pageviews than in any previous year. read more »

Brown Bag Presentation: Jeremy Milloy on addiction and the American workforce

Join the Reuther Library this Wednesday, August 29, for a brown bag research presentation from Jeremy Milloy, PhD., who visits us from Trent University in Ontario.

Describing his work, Milloy explains, "Beginning in the 1960s, drug use by workers became a major societal concern in the United States and Canada. This discovery of a 'drug problem' among workers was a historic shift with meaningful consequences for workers, employers, unions, and the North American workplace. read more »

HistoryPin: Tour the Detroit Sit-Down Strikes of 1937

The Reuther Library is pleased to announce its partnership with HistoryPin. For the uninitiated, HistoryPin is a popular, interactive social media platform that uses geotagging to link historical photographs to modern mapping systems.
Oral History Heroes: Dave Miller

Since his early days as a child laborer in a textile mill, Dave Miller (1891-1979) devoted himself to the labor movement. Miller shared his life and times—and thoughts on the present and the future—in a circa-1972 interview available in the Reuther Library’s holdings.

Working on cataloging this interview, I came away impressed with Miller’s witness to a broad range of developments and events that shaped the twentieth century, not to mention his direct involvement in some them, including his advocacy for women’s suffrage and against the death penalty and his fight for universal health care. Miller deserves recognition for his pioneering work in the UAW alone, but he did that and more. read more »

The Sheffield Collection will give insight into the life and work of a labor and community trailblazer through personal and family papers, correspondence, images, and ephemera collected over a life of leadership: as an official in UAW Local 600, founding member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), President of the Detroit CBTU, founder of the politically influential Trade Union Leadership Council (TULC) and Detroit Association of Black Organizations (DABO), director of the Detroit NAACP, and administrative assistant to UAW President Douglas Fraser. read more »

Subject Focus: Remembering the Flint Sit-Down

Tired of reductions in pay and jobs, increased workloads, and harassment of United Automobile Workers organizers, on December 30, 1936 automotive workers in the General Motors Fisher Number One Plant in Flint, Michigan sat down on the job. For the next 44 days workers refused to work or leave the Fisher One and Two plants, and later Chevrolet Number 4. Michigan Governor Frank Murphy refused to order the strikers out, so GM attempted to expel them by shutting off the plants’ heat and electricity and by preventing food deliveries. read more »

Subject Focus: WDET in the UAW Years

Metro Detroiters recognize radio station WDET 101.9 FM as Wayne State University’s local voice for National Public Radio. Prior to 1952, however, WDET served as the local voice for labor. Unhappy with the critical representation of the labor movement in newspapers and on the radio, in 1944 the United Automobile Workers filed applications with the Federal Communications Commission to run independent radio stations in six markets with strong labor ties: the UAW’s hometown of Detroit; Flint, Michigan; Cleveland, Ohio; Los Angeles; Chicago; and Newark, New Jersey. read more »

The 1972 Lordstown Strike

Work speed-ups on the line helped to initiate the 1972 strike at a General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio. Although the strike’s impact was initially felt at GM, its influence quickly grew, informing the nation about the struggles of its young workforce, and influencing the content of congressional hearings and national studies. read more »

UAW Aerospace Department Records Part II Now Open

Watching footage of NASA’s space shuttles blasting off and orbiting the globe, did you realize you were looking at union-made vehicles? Just like a Corvette or F-150, those spaceships (along with their giant orange boosters) were built by union labor, represented by the UAW.

The newly opened addition to the UAW Aerospace Department Records shines a light on the industry side of aerospace. read more »
