Parts 1 and 2 consist of correspondence, minutes, and reports. Subjects include Administrative Board meetings; American Federation of Teachers; conventions; Detroit Federation of Teachers; Executive Council meetings; Haven Hill conferences; legislative lobbying activities; membership campaigns; metropolitan teachers' institutes; Michigan AFL-CIO Council; Michigan Constitutional Convention (1961); teachers' salary and fringe benefits surveys; treasurer reports; White House Conference on Children and Youth (1960). Correspondents include Detroit city officials, Michigan congressmen and state officials, and national congressmen and officials including John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Most of the letters are answers to invitations for speaking engagements.
Part III deals mostly with the efforts to organize teachers during the 1960s and 1970s and dealing with the strikes that accompany labor disputes which is represented in the series Locals. There is ample amount of information about the American Federation of Teachers growth and inner workings during the 1960s and 1970s in the convention files; within these files there are not only basic convention materials but also notes from committee work and flyers from various factions within the AFT. MFT was a part of policy in education finances, assessments of teachers and teacher centers and is reflected in files dealing with the department of education and the like. Part III covers a broad range of topics with specific details on education reform in the 1970s, collective bargaining issues for teachers, political structures in Michigan and various issues on civil rights in Michigan, particularly the bussing of students. Series five contains photographs and audio recordings.

The Jerome P. Cavanagh Photographs and Other Material consists of numerous photographs, the majority of which were taken during his time in office. These photographs cover events such as the 1968 Olympic Bid, visits from Lyndon B. Johnson, aftermath of the 1967 unrest, and Mayor Cavanagh with various prominent Detroit business people, union members, and politicians. Also included in the collection is memorabilia from his 1966 Senate campaign, 1968 Olympic information, and other various memorabilia during his time in office.

Mr. Connor served with the Public Works Administration in Gary, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois (1935-43). He was executive director of the Detroit Citizens Housing and Planning Council (1943-48), a member of the Detroit Common Council (1948-66), chairman of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors (1954- 58), and a Detroit Recorder's Court judge (1966-1967). Mr. Connor also served as secretary of the Southeastern Michigan Community Research Corporation (1958-63), director of the National Association of County Officials (1959), and as a member of the National Advisory Committee on Urban Health Affairs (1963-64). Subjects include Works Progress Administration; Adult and Workers Education (1935-43); civic, housing, health, transportation, and industrial problems of the Detroit metropolitan area (1943-66); urban health problems in Russia (1964); election campaigns for Detroit Council (1948-65); primary election for governor of Michigan (1960); Recorder's Court election (1966). Correspondents include Al Barbour, Edward Carey, Jerome P. Cavanagh, Eleanor Coit, John Dingell, Philip Hart, Nicholas Hood, Frank Kelly, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Frank Martel, Mel Ravitz, Roy Reuther, Dorothy K. Roosevelt, and G. Mennen Williams.

"Clancy" Sayen, who was president of the Air Line Pilots Association (1951-62) and of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots (1952-64), include materials such as correspondence, research studies, tape recordings, photos, books, and files on subjects including pension plans; insurance problems of pilots and stewardesses; airline strikes in the U.S. and other countries; flight engineer and "third man" problems; loyalty investigations; David Behncke (former Air Line Pilots Association president); employment agreements; national defense and the executive reserve; national emergency transportation planning; legal problems and arbitration; international aviation meetings; supersonic transport; safety studies; the Air Navigation Committee of ICAO; and other aviation subjects. Correspondents include Leverett Edwards, Nathan Feinsinger, Arthur Goldberg, Edgar F. Kaiser, John F. Kennedy, James Landis, George Meany, Newton Minow, Vassily Mishinkin, A.S. "Mike" Monroney, E.R. Part II: Covers the years 1939-1951, largely consisting of notes and materials Sayen compiled while an undergraduate and graduate student, when he taught Geography classes during graduate school, as well as when he learned to fly and was trained to be a flight instructor.

Part III: Nearly all of this portion focuses on materials Sayen used to evaluate the ALPA retirement plan from 1947-1948.

UFW Administration Department Records

United Farm Workers grew out of several farm workers organizations of the 1960s and was led by Cesar Chavez for over thirty years. The Administration Department records reflect the wide range of people and groups with whom the UFW corresponded. The work of the union itself is well represented, including U.S., Canada, and Europe boycott files, El Malcriado files, and negotiations with southern California grape growers.

Part 3 of the records represent the second decade of the union’s progress toward the goals of improving wages and working conditions for farm workers. Included are major legal cases, including UFW vs. Teamsters, UFW vs. DiGeorgio, and the Blythe Massacre; boycotts, including the Lettuce Boycott and Grape Boycott; and correspondence, including Cesar Chavez personal correspondence.

Few cities are more closely tied to the labor movement than Detroit. From the outset, Labor Day in Detroit was about worker demonstration, which typically took the form of a parade. The city's first Labor Day celebration was held on August 16, 1884 in Recreation Park and attracted 50,000 spectators. Executive Order 10988
