Landmarks of Labor

In 1955, The Laborer magazine commissioned a series of paintings titled "Landmarks in Labor", including them in their publications throughout that year. Each painting depicts and describes vital accomplishments of the American labor movement, from the birth of the eight hour day to the founding of the Knights of Labor. The images, found in a collection of labor union photographs, are being presented but the Reuther Library in anticipation for the upcoming Labor Day. read more »

Few cities are more closely tied to the labor movement than Detroit. From the outset, Labor Day in Detroit was about worker demonstration, which typically took the form of a parade. The city's first Labor Day celebration was held on August 16, 1884 in Recreation Park and attracted 50,000 spectators. The earliest Labor Day image in the Reuther's collections shows Randolph Street in downtown Detroit circa 1890s (pictured below). read more »

This image appeared in the October 1964 issue of AFSCME's Public Employee magazine with the caption:
“Labor Day in Panama: Armed Forces Employees Local 907, and Company/Government Employees Local 900, in Panama, came up with one of the best ideas we’ve heard of for marking Labor Day. The two AFSCME locals got together and decided to present a Labor Day award to the first baby born on Labor Day in the Canal Zone. George Caesar, president of Local 907, at right, looks on as members of the locals present a cake to the mother of the first little arrival. Saturnin Maugé is president of Local 900. The two AFSCME unions represent nearly 5000 workers employed by the three branches of the US Armed Forces and the Canal Zone Company/Government. William Sinclair, AFSCME representative in the Canal Zone who is coordinating the two locals’ organizing campaigns, reported that they should be over the 5000 mark by mid-November.”

The images, fused as one, form one of the most memorable and poignant pictures of his career. The location was later renamed Kennedy Square after the assassination of President Kennedy.
