Parts 1 and 2 consist of correspondence, minutes, and reports. Subjects include Administrative Board meetings; American Federation of Teachers; conventions; Detroit Federation of Teachers; Executive Council meetings; Haven Hill conferences; legislative lobbying activities; membership campaigns; metropolitan teachers' institutes; Michigan AFL-CIO Council; Michigan Constitutional Convention (1961); teachers' salary and fringe benefits surveys; treasurer reports; White House Conference on Children and Youth (1960). Correspondents include Detroit city officials, Michigan congressmen and state officials, and national congressmen and officials including John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Most of the letters are answers to invitations for speaking engagements.
Part III deals mostly with the efforts to organize teachers during the 1960s and 1970s and dealing with the strikes that accompany labor disputes which is represented in the series Locals. There is ample amount of information about the American Federation of Teachers growth and inner workings during the 1960s and 1970s in the convention files; within these files there are not only basic convention materials but also notes from committee work and flyers from various factions within the AFT. MFT was a part of policy in education finances, assessments of teachers and teacher centers and is reflected in files dealing with the department of education and the like. Part III covers a broad range of topics with specific details on education reform in the 1970s, collective bargaining issues for teachers, political structures in Michigan and various issues on civil rights in Michigan, particularly the bussing of students. Series five contains photographs and audio recordings.

Judge Damon Keith served in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Judge Keith delivered several landmark rulings in civil rights and civil liberties cases and played an active role in various civic, cultural and educational associations, including the Detroit YMCA, the United Negro College Fund, and the Detroit National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He is the recipient of the NAACP’s Springarn Medal, the American Bar Association’s Thurgood Marshall Award, the Edward J. Devitt Award for Distinguished Service to Justice, and over thirty honorary degrees. Judge Keith’s papers document important milestones in his career, his precedent-setting judicial decisions, his role in ensuring equal justice for all Americans, and the many honors and awards bestowed upon him for his dedication to civil rights and to the City of Detroit.

Annetta Miller Papers

Annetta Miller was a Registered Nurse, peace activist, and three-term member of the Michigan State Board of Education. Her experiences serving in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II drove her to join the peace movement during the Vietnam War. A Democrat representing Michigan's 18th congressional district, much of Miller's first two terms on the Board of Education dealt with desegregation of the Detroit Public Schools following the finding in Bradley v. Milliken by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan that the district was guilty of de jure segregation, Judge Stephen J. Roth's order that they desegregate via an inter-district busing plan, and subsequent decisions including the United State Supreme Court overturning Roth's decision in Milliken v. Bradley. Miller opposed the allocation of public funds to private and religious schools, and supported the separation of church and state in public education. The Annetta Miller Papers document the activities of the Board of Education during Miller's 24-year tenure through administrative documentation and supplementary resources on education, as well as Miller's involvement with the peace movement and other political organizing. Of particular interest are materials related to Bradley v. Milliken, desegregation, and busing plans; taxpayer financing of private education and reallocation to public schools; and Miller's son's participation in the 1965 Selective Service Office Sit-In in Ann Arbor.

This fall we have processed two new collections that add to the history of desegregation efforts in Detroit schools. These collections highlight the disparate perspectives represented in archives, where pieces of evidence can be assessed together to gain a deeper understanding of events in the past.

Attempts to desegregate Detroit Public Schools, particularly the court case Bradley v Milliken during the 1970s and 1980s, were very controversial endeavors. read more »
