Kathy Groehn Cosseboom El-Messidi Papers

Kathy Groehn was born in 1946 and grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She graduated
from Grosse Pointe High School in 1963, then from the University of Michigan (B.A.
1967) and Southern Oregon College (M.A.). During the 1960s she was a reporter for the
Grosse Pointe News and used her experiences as a basis for research on her book, Grosse Pointe, Michigan: Race Against Race, by Kathy Cosseboom (Michigan State University Press, 1972). The book deals with racial and social attitudes in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe as revealed in education, school-community relations, housing
discrimination, and religious institutions. It won the American Pen Women’s first prize
for information books in 1974.

As Kathy El-Messidi, she earned a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Oklahoma. Her Ph.D. dissertation was published as The Bargain: The Story behind the 30-Year Honeymoon of GM and the UAW, by Kathy Groehn El-Messidi (Nellen Publishing Co. 1980). This book deals with the history and politics behind the 1948 collective bargaining agreement between General Motors and the UAW. As the daughter of Thomas Groehn, former news relations director for GM, El-Messidi had special access to materials and individuals at GM for this study.

In the 1990s, Dr. El-Messidi was associate director of the Center for Research on Parallel
Computation at Rice University in Texas and more recently has worked as an education
consultant and market intelligence specialist in Texas.

This collection contains the files and research materials for both of Kathy Groehn
Cosseboom El-Messidi’s books.

John Herling Papers

John Herling was a prolific journalist, working for several publications and serving as White House correspondent and syndicated columnist specializing in labor affairs throughout the 1950s & 1960s. He owned "John Herling's Labor Letter," which he edited and published from 1947-1990, as well as authoring several books, including Strikes Under the New Deal, The Great Price Conspiracy and The Right to Challenge. Herling was also working on other books about the labor movement, including a book about the UAW, at the time of his death in 1994.

His papers reflect his interest in writing about the labor movement in America. The records in Part 2 consist primarily of interviews conducted by Herling as research for a book on the UAW, which was ultimately written by John Barnard and published in 2004 under the title, American Vanguard: The United Auto Workers During the Reuther Years, 1935-1970. The interviews were conducted mainly with people associated with the UAW, however several involve people in other labor unions. The records consist of transcripts or notes (taken during interviews that were not recorded), although there are a few speech and panel transcripts as well (noted in inventory). There are also audio recordings of interviews, panels, and conferences. Researchers should note that some pages of interview transcripts are missing, some audio recordings are unmarked, and not all interviews exist in both transcript and audio recording format.

Michael Hrabar Papers

Michael Hrabar was a member of UAW Local 600’s Tool and Die Unit. An active member of
the local (at one time the largest UAW local in the country), Hrabar held various offices within
the organization. He served as a delegate to the Local 600 General Council, ran for vice president of the local in 1944, and also ran to become a member of the local’s Bargaining
Committee in 1966. He completed UAW leadership training in civil rights, civil liberties, and
human relations in 1960. In 1952 and 1954 Hrabar was accused of being a member of the
Communist Party during hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. His wife, Olga Hrabar, was president of Local 600's women's auxiliary.

This collection consists mostly of materials accumulated by Hrabar about different candidates
running for offices within Local 600 as well as the positions of various interest groups within the local. Local 600 was one of the most liberal and outspoken UAW locals and there are many examples of the local’s opposition to Walter Reuther’s leadership as president of the UAW. There are several unofficial publications by Local 600’s different interest groups, with clippings, photos, and memorabilia making up the rest of the collection.

James Moore Audio Recordings

In the fall of 1983 Professor James Moore recorded an oral history interview with Shelton Tappes and Catherine "Babe" Gelles, both early organizers for the United Auto Workers Union (UAW). Taped in Tappes' Detroit home, the interviewees gave firsthand account of 1937's "Battle of the Overpass," a brutal response by members of the Ford Service Department to the UAW organizing effort against Ford Motor Company. The interview lends offers two different vantage points: Gelles', as that of a member of the UAW's Women's Auxiliary, and Tappes' as that of a Ford Employee and early Black organizer. Their testimony includes description of brutal assaults on organizers that occurred at the hands of Ford Servicemen, including Walter Reuther, Richard Frankensteen, and Gelles herself; demonstrated anti-union bias by the Dearborn Police Department; description of triage set up in the union hall to attend to the wounded; and UAW organizing efforts that followed the event. The interview was recorded for use in "Mass Producing Fords", a documentary for the United Kingdom's Open University.

Henry Kraus Papers

Mr. Kraus was the first editor of the UAW's newspaper The United Auto Worker (later changed to Solidarity). He was active in the early attempts by the UAW (first under the AFL and later under the CIO) to organize the auto industry. Files for the late 1920s and early 1930s cover the attempts by groups, including the Auto Workers Union of the Trade Union Unity League, to organize auto workers, and discuss such events as the Murray Body Strike (1929); the Ford Hunger March (1932); and the Briggs Strike (1933). There are many items pertaining to the AFL's work in the auto industry, such as material on the threatened auto strike of March 1934, the Toledo Auto-Lite and Chevrolet strikes of 1934 and 1935, and conferences and conventions of the UAW-AFL. The collection also has many files of the AFL's Detroit office for the early 1930s. Particularly well covered are the activities of the UAW-CIO from 1936 to 1940, including the South Bend Convention, the sit-downs, early attempts to organize Ford, and the Homer Martin controversy (resulting in the split of 1939). The Flint Sit-Down Strike and factionalism in the UAW are particularly well documented. Correspondents include nearly every major AFL, CIO, and UAW leader of the period. Among them are John Brophy, F. J. Dillon, Adolph Germer, William Green, John L. Lewis, Homer Martin, Rose Pesotta, Walter Reuther, and R. J. Thomas. Public figures include Charles Coughlin and Frank Murphy. Nine reels of microfilm complement content in Part I and are described in a separate guide.

Part 3 contains manuscripts, notes and research materials from Kraus’s three major books, as well as materials from his other books and writings including those on medieval art. Also included are transcripts of oral histories from a variety of individuals involved in the labor movement, especially those from the 1937 Flint Sit-Down Strike.

UAW Local 5 Records

United Auto Workers Local 5 began in 1933 as an American Federation of Labor local at Studebaker in South Bend, Indiana, established in opposition to depression conditions. By the time it became affiliated with the UAW in 1935 it was the largest auto local in the early struggle to establish auto unions and one of the earliest to organize. They joined with other industrial unions to form the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1937 and remained one of the leading locals in UAW history through the 1950s. Local 5 records reflect their operation and programs through the demise of Studebaker in 1965.

UAW Local 887 Records

Local 887 of the United Auto Workers was borne out of labor struggles between its predecessor union, UAW-CIO Local 683, and North American Aviation in Los Angeles, CA shortly before American involvement in WWII. Because of the company's production of military aircraft, the federal government has historically been closely involved with labor disputes affecting Local 887's members.

The records of UAW Local 887 reflect the union's long struggle with management over such issues as wages and union rights. Part 1 contains information relating to cases with the National War Labor Board, the National Labor Relations Board and the Wage Stabilization Board. Part 2 contains mainly Executive Board and Joint Council minutes, as well as individual unit minutes. Also included are correspondence, negotiations and agreements.

UAW Local 9 Records

United Auto Workers Local 9 was chartered as an American Federation of Labor local in 1933, servicing workers at the Bendix Products Corporation in South Bend, Indiana. After a disagreement with the AFL, the local joined the UAW in 1935, participating in the auto industry's first sit-down strike the following year. Local 9 records document its organization, factional struggles with the AFL as well as the company union, Bendix Employees Association, and general operations.

UAW President's Office: Douglas Fraser Records

Douglas A. Fraser was elected UAW President in 1977 following the retirement of Leonard Woodcock. As UAW President Fraser presided over the emergence of Japanese auto imports into the previously US dominated auto industry, growing concerns over air quality, worker safety issues, and job re-training. In 1981 Fraser successfully reunited the UAW with the AFL-CIO after a 13 year absence. Fraser was also instrumental in assisting Chrysler Motor Company’s federal bailout loan to avoid the company’s bankruptcy and the loss of thousands of auto workers’ jobs in 1979. In recognition of his commitment to the success of both US auto companies and workers, in 1980 Fraser was the first union member to be elected to the Chrysler Board of Directors. Fraser retired from the UAW in 1983, succeeded by Owen Bieber, to begin his second career as Professor of Labor Studies at Wayne State University. Douglas Fraser died on February 23, 2008.

The collection is divided into two parts. Part 1 includes subjects such as Chrysler Corporation; UAW Regions 1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D; Canadian autoworkers; Detroit economic development; foreign automobile industry; Democratic Party politics; plant closings; air pollution; contract negotiations; strikes; SUB; Progressive Alliance; Walter Reuther; and early retirement.

Part 2 represents subject files and International Executive Board files not represented in Office of the President Part 1. The subject files provide information regarding the UAW’s interaction with Chrysler Motor Coporation during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and detailed information related to the Chrysler Federal Loan Bailout. The International Executive Board Files provide insight into the interaction between the UAW Office of the President and the International Executive Board of the union.

UAW President's Office: Howard Young Records

Howard Young began working for the UAW in 1960, as an Actuarial Consultant and later became the Director of the Social Security Department. Later in his UAW career, his main function was as Special Consultant to the President, but he also worked as a member of the Pension Research Council, Director of Social Security, Director of the Research, and Director of Information Systems. He worked for the UAW from 1960-1971 and again from 1974-1987. During that time he worked under four UAW presidents: Reuther, Woodcock, Fraser and Bieber. His work included collective bargaining, public policy on economic and social programs (job and income security, pensions, and benefits), international trade, the impact of technological change on workers, and federal policy regarding energy and automobile standards.

The UAW President’s Office: Howard Young Records consist of the chronological, subject and meeting files of Howard Young during his tenure in various positions at the UAW. The Chronological files combine the correspondence and research from his position as Special Consultant with those from his positions as Director of Social Security, Director of the Research, and Director of Information Systems. The subject files cover a range of topics with emphasis on pensions, auto emissions, international trade, technology, and Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors. The meeting files consist of the correspondence, presentations, speeches, and testimony of Howard Young to a wide range of organizations, college classes, conferences and government committees and subcommittees. A gap in the records exists from mid 1971 through late 1974, a period when he was not employed with the UAW.

UAW Public Relations Department Photographs and Sound and Video Recordings

Since the United Automobile Workers of America (UAW) was established as an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in August 1935, the union has maintained an office to deal with public relations. At that time, a "Committee on Publication" was formed, which became the "Publication Committee" in April 1936. The Committee subsequently became the "Publicity Department" in August 1936, when the UAW became an independent union affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). This became the UAW's Public Relations Department some years later. The primary purpose of the original Committees and Department was the production of the union's national newspaper, the United Automobile Worker, which became Solidarity in 1957. Over the years, as the UAW grew into a large, powerful union, the P.R. department played an increasingly important role in writing speeches and producing various publications. It also generated large numbers of photographic images, created television advertisements, and issued press releases, delivering the union’s official stance on nearly all issues. In recent years, the P.R. Department has also been responsible for maintaining the union’s social media presence. The collection consists of Audio-Visual material, including photographic prints and contact sheets, videotapes, and audio recordings.

UAW Region 7: Canadian Office Records

United Auto Workers Canadian Region 7 began the same year as the international union and was recognized by all major automotive manufacturers in the early 1940s. With a reputation for being militant, the union grew to be the largest in Canada, pioneering pension security, guaranteed annual wages, pre-paid medical prescriptions, and wage parity for workers in the country. Their records reflect the organization and activities of this regional office, including those of two of its directors, George Burt and Dennis McDermott.

WJBK-TV Collection: Walter Reuther’s FBI Files

The WJBK-TV Collection: Walter Reuther’s FBI Files consists of the FBI FOIA release files and related correspondence concerning Walter P. Reuther. The files were released by the FBI under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and were then obtained by WJBK-TV Inc. under the direction of WJBK-TV Inc. reporter, William J. Gallagher, in 1987. The majority of the FBI files contain records concerning an internal security investigation of Walter Reuther and the United Auto Workers (UAW) between 1940 and 1970. Additional FBI files relate to a Security of Government Employees investigation of Walter Reuther between 1965 and 1967 when Reuther was an applicant for a position with the State Department, as well as to a background investigation of Walter Reuther, which was conducted at the request of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy between 1953 and 1964, when Reuther was under consideration to be a member of the committee in order to study the peacetime uses of atomic energy. Correspondence records relating to these FBI FOIA release files were created in 1986 and 1987, and are largely between William J. Gallagher and either Robert J. Walsh, Chief of the Freedom of Information/Privacy Office, or Emil P. Moschella, Chief of the Freedom of Information-Privacy Acts Section, Records Management Division.

A Legacy Unspooled: Archival Research for Documentary Filmmakers

In April 2013, we begin a periodic guest blogging series where we invite frequent researchers to discuss their projects. Our first comes from Sasha Reuther.

Sasha Reuther is a Producer/Director of commercials, music videos, and historical programming for networks and clients including National Geographic, Sundance Channel, VIBE Magazine, Armani, Motorola, and The Starwood Hotel Group. His first documentary feature, Brothers On The Line, is an award-winning historical odyssey exploring the lives of labor organizers Walter, Roy, and Victor Reuther (his grandfather) and their extraordinary, though equally contentious, leadership of the United Auto Workers union. Aside from his film work, Sasha has written articles for Time Magazine, Huffington Post, and The IFP. Born in Detroit and a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he lives in NYC with his wife, Sonya. read more »
