Carolyn DesJardins Papers

In June 1982 Carolyn DesJardins (formerly Carolyn Larry) began working as a security officer at Detroit Edison’s Fermi 2 nuclear power plant located in Newport, Michigan. DesJardins later moved into a staff position where she was responsible for safeguarding security information about the plant’s operation, construction, and equipment. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission enforces rules about the accessibility of the information that DesJardins was protecting. During DesJardin’s tenure, the Fermi 2 Director of Security sent information through the computer system outside of the plant, which was in opposition to the Commission’s rules. Desjardins informed the director of this error, and after continued infringements, DesJardins alerted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, thus becoming a whistleblower. This resulted in her demotion to her previous position of security officer. In response, DesJardins sued to return to her former position. While she won her lawsuit, DesJardins never returned to her position. Instead DesJardins worked as a nuclear security investigator, conducting background checks and investigations.

The Carolyn DesJardins Papers document DesJardin’s whistleblower lawsuit and include correspondence, primarily from Detroit Edison and DesJardin’s lawyer, and materials related to the lawsuit, including a transcript of the trial.

Joseph Chrapkiewicz Papers

Joseph Chrapkiewicz began his union career in 1947 as Chief Steward in the United Automobile Workers Local 78, Kelsey-Hayes, Detroit, after which he held various offices in the local. In the 1970s he also edited the local's newspaper, Union Picket.

Chrapkiewicz's papers pertain to his tenure (and his predecessor, Maurice Terpenning's) on the West Side Local 174 & Local 78 Bargaining Committee, as well as various other committees he served on.

National Policy Association Records

The National Policy Association (NPA)was established in 1934 as the National Planning Association, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research institution founded by prominent business and labor leaders who believed that the private sector should actively participate in the formulation of public policy. The organization’s name was changed to National Policy Association in 1997. Organized with a broad-based structure of committees and an independent research program, the NPA brought together influential leaders from business, labor, agriculture and academia in four major policy committees: The Committee on New American Realities, Food and Agriculture Committee, Global Economic Council and North American Committee. Among the influential committees on international economic and foreign policy were the Canadian-American Committee, the British-American Committee and the Committee on the Changing International Realities. At one time, over 400 private-sector leaders belonged to one or more of the policy committees, which explored domestic and global concerns, developed recommendations and commissioned studies. NPA-sponsored research focused on major economic and social issues facing the U.S. and other nations and fundamental questions relating to strengthening U.S. global competitiveness. The NPA reached out to policymakers and the public through publications and events such as seminars and conferences. The NPA had its offices in Washington, D.C. It ceased operation in 2003.

The records detail the daily operations and interests of the NPA. They show the growing
range of policy issues that the organization dealt with during its seven decades and its
wide range of members, authors and contributors. The records include many NPA
publications and publications of its committees from the 1930s to 2003. There is
correspondence with White House and congressional leaders, CEOs and executives of
hundreds of corporations in the U.S., Canada and overseas, as well as many academics
and labor leaders. They include organizational documents such as memos,
correspondence, reports and meeting minutes of the Board of Trustees and Executive
Committee, as well as documents from many events sponsored by the NPA and its
committees.

Urban Environment Conference (UEC) Records

The Urban Environment Conference (UEC) grew out of an effort in 1971 by Michigan Senator Philip Hart to provide a forum for the discussion of problems and issues of joint concern to urban reform groups, environmentalists, and organized labor. Within a year, most of the participants decided to organize the group as a non-profit corporation with both advocacy and clearinghouse functions, including lobbying, education and publicity, fundraising, leadership training, technical assistance on program development, and coalition-building. While protecting on-the-job and community health has been the Conference’s priority issue, UEC also has a notable record on energy, mass transit, fair housing and full employment.

The Urban Environment Conference Collection consists of correspondence, reports, minutes,
clippings and publications related primarily to environmental/occupational health issues affecting minorities at home and in the workplace.

Wayne State University Association of Faculty Women Records

The Association of Faculty Women was composed of female employees of Wayne State University in instructional or administrative positions. Its stated purpose was "to encourage membership of qualified faculty women to appointive and elective positions and responsibilities in the University and in the community; to promote the educational and professional welfare of all women, both staff and students, on the University Campus; and to enrich the educational and professional interests of faculty women."

The Faculty Women's Club of Wayne University was founded in January of 1935 by female faculty members of Wayne University. The organization's constitution initially stated that its purpose was "to promote the interests of all women on the campus and especially to forward the social life and professional interests of the women of the faculty"; later this purpose was changed to read "...the social life and professional interests of the members of the organization." The group was briefly named the Wayne University Women's Club, from 1939 until 1940. In 1960 the Faculty Women's Club became the Association of Faculty Women. The name change was intended to avoid confusion with Wayne State University's Faculty Wives' Club, and to emphasize the professional rather than the social aspects of the organization. The Association of Faculty Women represented the female faculty and staff of Wayne State University until 1971, at which time the group was superseded by the President's Commission on the Status of Women.
