(12525) AFSCME Illinois Council 44 Representative Benedict goes to jail

AFSCME Council 44 representative Harold Benedict arrives for his jail sentence. Benedict was found to have violated a court injunction (which had been overturned) during a strike of Belwood nursing home workers, AFSCME Local 241 Peoria County, two years prior. Benedict, front row right, was joined by a crowd of supporters, including his wife and children. While serving out his sentence, Benedict successfully organized the county jail's deputy sheriffs, who voted to affiliate with AFSCME Council 44. This image appeared in the October 1971 issue of AFSCME's Public Employee magazine.
