Bargaining Gains

The UFW has struggled against many obstacles over the years but its fight for union contracts has resulted in significant improvements for UFW members. Labor contractors have been replaced by hiring halls administered by the UFW. Improved conditions in the fields have given UFW members a greater sense of dignity and a healthier workplace. Members receive medical benefits and a pension plan.

The UFW has also influenced national politics. A historic milestone was reached in 1975 when California passed its Agricultural Labor Relations Act which guaranteed secret union elections for farm workers.
