The department responsible for overseeing the functions (i.e. activation/de-activation, recruitment, membership eligibility and activities) of student organizations throughout the history of Wayne State University has operated under the following names: Student Activities, Student Activities Office, Division of Student Personnel-Student Activities, Division of Student Activities Service Office, Division of Student Personnel-Office of Student Organizations, Division of Student Personnel-Director of Student Organizations, Division of Student Personnel-Director of Student Organizations and Activities, Division of Student Personnel-Student Organizations, Student Personnel-Student Organizations, Division of Student Personnel-Student Activities Counseling, Division of Student Affairs-Student Activities Counseling. The Dean of Students Office is currently responsible for overseeing the functions of student organizations.
The record contains files of student organizations that were active between 1931 -1981 at Wayne State University. A majority of the organizations became inactive between 1967-1971. Some organizations were active when the university was known as College of the City of Detroit, Wayne University and currently Wayne State University. Documents include membership rosters, correspondence, student organization publications, constitutions, charters, meeting minutes, financial records, flyers, programs, newsletters, photographs, and news clippings.
