Correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, press releases, leaflets, and published material collected by Mr. Shier, who served as a member of the Shop Committee of UAW Local 6, Melrose Park, Illinois (1950); as financial secretary of UAW International Harvester Council; and as a UAW International representative for the Competitive Shop Department (1958). In 1960 he joined the organizing staff of the UAW and was especially active in organizing and servicing local unions in Illinois. Subjects include the agricultural implement industry; the Aurora-Caterpillar organizing campaign (1958); the Barber-Colman organizing campaigns (1955-61); the Paper Converting and Finishing Company; and John W. Hobbs Corporation organizing campaigns (1962-63); the Monroe Auto Equipment Company (Cuzard, Nebraska) organizing campaign (1961-1963); union relations with the International Harvester Corporation; factional fights of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, and of the International Association of Machinists, Lodge 113. Correspondents include Paul H. Douglas, Pat Greathouse, Carroll Hutton, John Livingston, Guy Nunn, Brendan Sexton, and Leonard Woodcock.
