Dr. Alexander J. Walt served as chief of surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital and Harper Hospital from 1965 to 1988. Dr. Walt served as the Penberthy Professor and was chairman of the Department of Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine from 1966-1988, and served as associate dean from 1965-1970. Dr. Alexander J. Walt was named Distinguished Professor of Surgery at Wayne State University in 1990. Dr. Walt died in 1996.

Materials in the School of Medicine Department of Surgery Office of the Chairman Records reflect the early years of Dr. Walt’s time as chairman. Material covers the Research Building dedication, office correspondence, student faculty assembly papers, and is largely focused on the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course from 1964-1969.
