John Wayne is flanked by honor guard while he makes his way to the “Miss Wayne University” rally during a visit to campus.

In addition to crowning the beauty queen, Mr. Wayne donated the crown used in the pageant and $1,000 to be used for the Student Loan Fund.

Wayne was in Detroit to promote his film “The Searchers.”
