Don Stevens was an honorary alumnus of both Michigan State University (MSU) and Wayne State University, serving on the Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors respectively. A prominent labor educator, he was the AFL-CIO Education Director for Michigan, a trustee of the Michigan Council on Economic Education, and was involved in labor education at MSU and Oakland University. He was also involved in labor circles more broadly, serving as the president of the Kent County CIO Council and the president of the local 386 Dairy Workers. He was a delegate to such bodies as the United Nations Conference (1952), the White House Conference on Education, the White House Conference on Children and Youth, and various committees of the State Department of Public Instruction.
The Don Stevens papers include newsletters and clippings, conference materials, correspondence, promotional materials for various education programs, and course related materials. Subjects include local labor activity, labor education, and economic and community services.
