Congratulations to Harriet Berg -- 100 years young
The Reuther Library extends its congratulations to Harriet Berg on becoming a centenarian this month. Berg has been a choreographer, teacher, performer and arts advocate in the Detroit area for many decades, especially known for her historical dance companies, the Madame Cadillac Dancers and the Renaissance Dance Company. She taught at all levels, from elementary school to college, notably at Wayne State University and at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit. Her papers are the keystone of the Michigan Dance Archives (MDA), located at the Reuther Library, which focuses on the history of dance in the Detroit metro area and across Michigan. The MDA was established and endowed in 1994 by Harriet Berg and her husband, Irving Berg, to create a resource for dancers, choreographers, teachers and scholars. Other dancers and dance organizations have contributed to the collection over the years.
Harriet celebrated her 100th birthday in style with a party filled with song, dance, tributes, cake and champagne, attended by many of her family, students, friends and admirers. Happy Birthday, Harriet, and best wishes for continued health and joy in the future!
