As unit chairman of Mergenthaler Local 475 of the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) and president of Members for Democratic Action of Local 475, John Dillon led the dissident faction of the Mergenthaler unit to leave the UE and affiliate with the United Auto Workers, becoming UAW-CIO Local 770, for whom Mr. Dillon served as president. The papers of Mr. Dillon relate the transition of the Mergenthaler unit into Local 770.
